Massachusetts New Car Dealers want to protect you from rape (by others)

So, you might be wondering what this topic (voter question #1) is all about.  Certainly the ads don't tell the story.  What it's all about is Right To Repair. 

The dealerships want to make it so no one else (other than themselves) can access your OBD2 info for good reason or bad (with a big accent on the bad in these ads)  Yet, nothing seems to protect you from the dealership employee being the stalker/predator.   To me, it really does seem that the dealers want to keep it so that you have to come see them and they can be the only one to f-u, one way or another.  

We voted for right to repair here a few years back and it passed pretty handily.  I'd be surprised if it doesn't pass again.   The opposing ads to these are far less dramatic and emphasize the right to repair part; they've been playing 2 to 3 times more often than the ads above as well.

If someone can glean pertinent information about my life from the OBD-2 scan of a 23 year old dodge ram, more power to them.

I see those ads regularly since I live in Mass. 

I believe they are trying to get people to believe that the OBDII info includes the codes to your garage door, and that someone with access to the diagnostic info could get the info needed to open your garage door and access your house. 
 

I paid a lot of hush money to my OBD to keep its mouth shut about how I violated it. But, look at that access port? It was just asking for HP Tuners. 

Yeah, I'm hearing these ads on the radio all the time. I hear the "guy who owns a shop just trying to make ends meet" one a lot more than the "OBDII hackerzzz will KILL YOU" one. IIRC, they put Right to Repair on the ballot a few years back and it passed no problem. Not sure why it's on there again, but that is annoying. 

EDIT: it passed in 2012 with 86% of votes in favor of Right to Repair. I knew I wasn't crazy.

That was my memory of it, not even close.  I would expect the same again this time.  

My suggestion would be not to take you car to the shop owned by your stalker in the first place.

Heck, if they have access to you OBD port, I would think it would be a HELL of a lot easier just to look at your registration if they want to know where you live.

My friend still lives in Massachusetts, says they're trying to scare people that people can gain your garage codes thru the homelink, phone contacts thru the stereo etc, etc.  Bottom line they don't want to lose business to the Indy shops.  It's total BS

So, we want to lock obd2 ports, but say nothing about the screens with tracking devices we all voluntarily carry around? Seems legit.

I hate it when I get calls at one in morning with heavy breathing followed by "P0171 Cyl bank 1 lean."

 Anyway.... There's a flag on youtube to report videos as "Spam/Misleading." I suggest everyone use it.

My wife who isn't a car person called this out a BS the other day. She said "what if the stalker works for the dealer?" We see this commercial a lot because we live in MA. I remember right to repair passing on the ballot years ago. This new question and stupid ads against it are in response to the auto manufacturers now using WiFi to access all kinds of info, and not allowing indy shops access to it I believe. Total Bull E36 M3 fear-mongering.
