When I got the 525iT home from Long Island and got to tidying up a few things, the headlight lenses were job 1. Even after a thorough wet sand and buff they're still not perfect.

I looked around to see if replacement lenses were available, and if I were to replace the units complete, what was entailed. The car came w/ halogen projectors, BTW - not xenons. Amazon had the OEM Hella Xenons in stock for something close to $1900/pair shipped (eek!)

So, a couple days ago I get a notification from amazon which helpfully pointed out that the Hella e39 driver side xenon headlight I'd viewed in November were subject to a price drop....

...Of $818.00.

Wha???

Quickly, I looked up the other side - rats. It was only reduced by about $700. As an added incentive they now had amazon prime shipping. The total was about 5 bills shipped. So I turned on 1-click ordering and clicked once.

Then I started searching eBay for used igniter/ballast modules, bulbs, and wiring harnesses.

The first one arrived yesterday, and I feverishly opened it, only to find that it included not only the igniter/ballast module, but the auto-leveling motor, and all bulbs. No additional harness is required, and as my car has factory self-leveling rear air springs - the leveling feature is redundant.

Score! berkeley Yeah!

When I ordered the shop manual it was twice the price of the e36 book.

That's 'cause it's ~2 books~

And the second, 2-3/4" thick tome is electrical system only.

It's got a lot of complexity for a a car.

On the upside, my '62 Sprite wiring diagram is one sheet, and the race car's is scribbled on a box flap.

I love Hella since I bought a pair of H4's for my Datsun 310GX in 1981. http://www.fornparts.com/

Rocking purchase you made!

Ooo, nice. Our E39 is running eBay headlights with the Xenon (original? Should be) pack just kinda floating around in the engine bay. The light output is underwhelming as well. I just pulled the trigger on these - got the last one for one side

BTW, those aren't Amazon's prices. They're just the middlemen for Remartautoparts in this case. They must have decided to dump their stock.

Very cool. I don't use Amazon that often. How do you get the notifications?

Amazon has some good prices on tools too. Bought a valvespring compressor a few months back for at least $40 less than anywhere else. Price difference was more than enough to cover shipping.

Hang on, the ones I found for those prices are halogens. What's the Hella part number for yours?

Man you could have just retrofitted a better projector in there for cheaper, I understand your lens issue though.

I put FX-35 bi-xenon projectors in my 09 Si for about $300 for ballasts, bulbs, projectors, and project costs.

I've been buying parts for the Porsche on Amazon - often the best prices I can find.

Great score!

We use Amazon Prime and Subscribe and Save for most of our purchases, as well. Tools on Amazon have the benefit of reviews, which I've found very helpful in deciding which brand/version of the tool to buy.

Nice find! To get the emails on pricing changes, add something to your wish list..

Regarding Amazon Prime -

I've gotten free shipping on:

  • a 140# tile saw

  • a huge miter saw stand

  • a 100# propane tank

  • a 10' long, 100# radiant heater

...among other things. Pays for itself every year.
