I need a lighter. Over the years I've had several. I have two zippos which are great, but they always run out of fluid every 6 days. I've had two crack lighters (the little jet ones) and they last about 3 months before something happens; the refill nipple breaks off, the little filament burns away, or the piezo ignition stops sparking.

I use a lighter for:

  • lighting a smoke in a convertible at 70 mph
  • starting a campfire in a downpour while camping in a tent in the wilderness
  • general firey things like shrink tube, lighting an acetylene torch, melting cut rope ends.

Zippos are reliable, but hard to get flame under kindling the flame is always being moved around by the tiniest breeze. $1.59 Bic lighters are reliable and last forever, but are useless if damp or breezy. And like I mentioned, the two torch lighters I have didn't last long despite paying good money for them.

Anyone have a recommendation? WLWBGB? (what lighter would Bear Grylls buy?)

A case of Bics. Grylls would have something similar, because you can go for a swim, and it will dry out and light. Try that with your Zippo.

I don't smoke but I've always had a fascination with lighters.

In for the latest and greatest.

A BernzOmatic with map gas always works for me. May not be stylish or fit in a pocket, but it always works,is cheap, and readily available.

You don't need a lighter, you need a torch.

Bear actually uses a flint fire starter:

The little peanut-lighters may give you the performance of a Zippo without the evaporation and leaking.

Is that actually flint or is it fire steel? I've seen him use that a few times on the show.

Zippo has a butane outdoor utility lighter that you might like. Reviews seem to indicate it's nanny-stated out of the box, but with a little tweaking becomes quite useable.

I smoked for 30 years. I have used every lighter known to man.

Buy the bic.

There's a torch lighter I swear by that I picked up at Walmart. It's basically a torch version of a Zippo. Used it for years to light various wicks around the fourth of July. Best iirc sub $5 lighter I've found. Will definitely light a smoke in a convertible traveling 70mph. I've only ever found them just before the register.

I just bought a butane multifunction lighter similar to this. Works great in wind. http://www.dx.com/p/multi-function-3-in-1-butane-lighter-bottle-opener-fruit-knife-56005?utm_source=dx&utm_medium=club&utm_campaign=club_skureview_page?utm_source=dx&utm_medium=club&utm_campaign=club_skureview_page#.VYL2OflViko

I just rock a zippo......usually lasts 2 weeks for fluid using it all the time. If it dips below that, I throw a new wadding in the reservoir.

I like the torchy types. Bics last forever. But a bic won't do convertibles and smokes.

How about a torch that uses cheap Bic lighters?

You know you want it

I've had a Bugatti B-1 for a few years. It is very attractive and works well if you don't use cheap fluid. I also have a butane pen torch from HF that I use a lot for starting fires.

WW1 Trench lighter? Not going to solve the "running out of fluid" but cool factor may make up for it?

In reply to mtn:

I was about to say, you can use the bic for everything but lightning a cigarette at 70mph, which doesn't matter as the car has an inbuilt solution for that.

I'd go with either a bic or three, or some nice "crack torch" type lighter, I think cigar guys like those, so a cigar shop probably knows (and sells) what's good.
