When I was a kid we had matchbox tracks. They were orange or yellow with connector pieces to join them. Today there are these lame-o "play sets" that, well, suck. I want 20 or 30 orange trans, a bunch of connectors and maybe some loops. Where can I find these, my kids are missing out!
I don't think you can get them anymore.
It might have something to do with the number of kids who found out what good weapons a piece of track made. Or that those tracks don't cost as much as the play sets.
I thought the orange ones were HotWheels brand. (Or were you just being general?) I had a bunch even as of a couple years ago when my wife bought/made me a big track.
Kinda on the same topic... Does anyone know where I can find a good selection of old hotwheels/matchbox cars still in the box other than CL or Ebay?
Yup, they must have been hotweels. I remember they were orange. As far as unopened cars, swap meets is the only other place I can think of.
You can find a decent selection of tracks on Amazon, or just get the kids into slot cars early. 
Cole, I seem to always see older mint diecasts at big swap meets and car shows, and occasionally at the local flea markets. Of course, I'm lucky enough that the shows at Carlisle are only about a 90 minute drive from here.
Great. I just have to get my timing down now. There seems to be only 2-3 swap meets a year out this way, but I could go to Charlotte and hit the big ones...
There are any number of people selling Hot Wheels tracks on eBay.
I finally found something decent. A four lane elimination track at Target for $18. Kind of like a pinewood Derby track, but with the losers getting ejected off. My 3 year old and I do bracket racing with his car collection.
There was an 8 lane one, but it was $80. Twice the capacity for 4 times the cost. That makes sense.
My kids have several, but they've all come from "kits" as it be

I got some of the original Hot Wheels when I was a kid. Matchbox cars also. Hot wheels had the orange tracks. Never knew matchbox to have anything similar.
You can buy individual sections of Hot Wheels track and the connectors at Toys R Us. I walked right past them a couple of times, but they're there. They're not even in a package, just loose. You can also buy individual clamps, banked corners, and loops.
Those things made great weapons, they hurt like hell on bare legs.
I was in the same boat for my kids and ended up finding and buying BluTrack http://www.blutrack.com/ It's a bit on the pricier side but I liked the two lanes race idea. And it claims to be a made in the USA product.

I bought some at Toys R Us last year to extend the loop kit.
Last time I looked, even walmart had plain tracks, like 5 section per box.

Kmart used to have this too. I saw a whole giant collection (seriously, had to be several hundred sections) of track. Loops, banks, launchers, the whole bit.
Check Wal-Mart or Target online. You're right, I remember being a kid and buying individual track pieces. Now, it's mostly "kits". Same orange track, just comes as a package. But most big stores will carry some track only pieces. I've got Matchbox/Hot Wheels crap at home everywhere.
I was looking for some last Christmass. All the local toy and big box stores had sets with short 1 foot sections. I wanted the old orange ones like I had as a kid.
I had a building that went in the ends of two sections of track. It had rollers inside that would propell the cars down the track. Battery opperated and they moved at a pretty good clip, or at least they did to an 8-10 year olds mind.
I got a big pack at Walmart a few years ago but the track was black with clear stripes in 2' sections. It hooked up to the old orange stuff and the banked turns I had in the attic and worked with the the Hot Wheels "motor".

Tell me about it, when we were kids, Mom would keep a section of our track in the pantry. Whenever we got out of line, out would come the track and the whippings would commence.
talk about insult to injury......not only were we missing a piece of our precious track, we got whipped with it!

Reading this thread, I can still hear the "thwap!" that signified a solid hit on bare skin.
And Joe, my mom used a "shampoo brush" to whack us. And OMG! I found the image of the very brush online:
That thing hurt like hell.

They're all owned by Mattel now anyhow, so it's the same thing. Strangely, Matchbox cars have gotten a lot more realistic over the ensuing years. I've bought several of the Matchbox gen1 4-runners because they look awesome for a 1$ toy.
Toys R Us has them in a bin near the cars for $1 a section.
