Because you need to show America that you're a man of the people.

Because Katie is way cuter than Dave.
I hope Letterman comes up with a "Top 10 Reasons John McCain went on Katie Couric's show."
"7: Katie might actually laugh at McCains jokes."
Osterkraut wrote: Send Palin. Isn't that who they're comparing to Obama these days? It'd also be hilarious.
...and make sure she works the phrase "Let's call a spade a spade here..." into the debate. Then she can smirk, laugh along with the crowd, and several days later say "Oooh nooooooo. I didn't mean it like that." That would be some funny E36 M3 right there.
Regarding McCain's motivation for wanting to skip the debates: Strategy and political posturing, pure and simple. He's not scared to debate Obama. Obama, after all, declined to do a series of "town-hall" meetings with McCain.
Either way, here's how the debates will go:
John McCain will be a smug and crotchety old berkeleyer, spewing tired ass Republican rhetoric, just as he was in the primaries.
Obama will do a lot of "Uh...um...uh...well...uh...um...uh...He's just like Bush!" and will take any oppotunity to push wealth-envy and class warfare.
While I watched ALL of the debates during the primaries (democrat and republican,) I might just skip this one and catch the highlights. I'm not voting for either one of these douchebags.
Poop,
I'm a pretty independent voter, but have you watched any of Obama's more recent interviews? Even opposite of Bill O'Reily, Obama was very clear and concise in his answers, with very little "uh, umm...or well uh umms" involved.
Not that McCain was, but he definitely was doing some Republican rhetoric.
I'd bet my left nut that there's NO_WAY_IN_HELL Obama (or McCain for that matter) would go on that show, or any other, without seeing ALL the questions at least a week in advance.

It's getting weirder... McCain compared to Andy Kaufman's Mighty Mouse

I'm starting to think that myself more and more every day...
I think a strong 3rd party may actually have a legitimate shot if these two clowns keep it up...
Imagine politics twenty years down the line. Whenever Facebook goes out of fashion they can just make their money off of blackmail/tabloid pictures.
"Sir, your argument against binge-drinking is very compelling, but so are these fifty-seven images of you doing keg stands back at state U."

McCain should work in DC right up to the last possible moment…make special provisions to arrive at the debates by military helicopter – jog in five seconds before go-live with his sleeves rolled up and scruffy hair – chug a full glass of water and assertively request another one – and then point to the debate host and say - OK man I’m ready, let’s do this – and then say – wait, I really apologize for the interruption but I know what’s on everyone’s mind...don’t worry, we’ve got the bank thing under control and the President will announce all the details first thing Monday morning – and then turn to Obama and say – you look well rested
That would be showmanship…I’m afraid what most people, including myself, are seeing in McCain’s recent actions is more along the lines of imposing unnecessary inconvenience on a lot of people.
The guy is known for his famous temper. I wonder if this will be the point when we get to see it.....
ON LIVE TELEVISION
That would be a straight up laugh riot...

Ignorant- you sure like those polls.
But they really don't mean much.
It doesn't matter how many people he impresses. It matters WHO he impresses.
Those stats you are quoting say most people think this or that. But most people are already decided.
You underestimate the impact of a strategy (stunt?) like this on middle America, the South, and undecided independents.
Middle America will think he is a patriot, the South will think he is a God and Country man, and undecided independents will like his free thinking.
The majority of people don't matter a flip. Mr. McCain doesn't need to impress Democrats, liberals, blacks, trendy educated voters, media elite, or metropolitan voters. He's already lost them.
He needs to impress the votes he can get. The remaining undecided swing votes who might choose him.
The election will be decided by a very small margin. He doesn't need to impress the masses, only the right small margin.
It's kind of like a trick play in football. It really doesn't matter how many of the fans, talking heads, or pundits think it was a bad idea. If it worked, even if it was incredibly ugly and clumsy, nothing else matters.
I think the whole thing is a little weird. But nobody cares what I think. There are a lot of middle America voters who will notice that Mr. Obama can't seem to maintain his balance, and that his standard "Umm" response is not very satisfying.

And there are people who think that in a debate constantly interrupting everyone else and throwing red herrings are signs of a good argument.
Obama supporter: 'Obama draws HUGE crowds, 20-25,000 wherever he goes. McCain, he usually gets 10-15,000." (smirks)
McCain supporter: 'That because the McCain supporters are all at work.'
umm...
before the debate happens..
McCain declares victory..

You may HATE marketing then. There is plenty of data to analyse. But in the end, most peoples emotions drive their decisions. A marketer's job is to understand these emotions and give emotional reasons to buy your stuff now.
