That at around 60k the timing belt goes...and it takes out the engine. You know what KIA stands for...Killed In Action, and thats what happens when driving them. You won't get me to buy one thats for sure.

Isn't 60k about normal life for a timing belt? I know i'm supposed to replace it on my cars every 60k miles.... Sounds like the owner is a moron. If you have a belted car, and an interference engine, then change the damn timing belt when you're supposed to. Common sense.
Timing belts aren't just about the mileage, but age also..... they can suffer from dry rot as well

Hmm, so kias are cheap junk, becasue its a cheap car so you shouldnt have to spend money on maintaince. Just like all the e30 bmws, neons, and all the other cars that are for sale on craigslist, and the owner has not the slightest idea when the timing belt has been replaced.
I'm confused. Was this sarcasm from Grtechguy? So it's an interference motor? BFD. "Takes out the motor" isn't exactly an accurate statement. Pull the head, slap some valves in, and have a big healthy pint of Harden the berkeley UP!

I'd laugh if it was a Kia with the BP motor..... it's not even interference. My Escort launched the timing belt in a spectacular way a couple weeks ago. Threw a new one on it, and drove away.

Sweet. Good to know.
You looking for one? I highly suggest it!
just a random CL posting I saw today
Obviously the CL poster is either used to cars with timing chains or pushrods.. basically he wanted the Kia to be an appliance that would run forever with no maintance.
if only he knew how easy it was to fix. Guess that means another 5 years of payments for him
The “Kia” name derives from two Chinese characters “ki” meaning “rising up” and “a” meaning Asia. Kia can therefore be roughly translated as “Rising out of the East” or “Rising out of Asia."

Not that I can contradict you, but why would a Korean company have a Chinese name?
The koreans use an amalgamation of japanese and chinese.
People forget how old china is and how much of an influence it has had over the millenia on it's smaller neighbors.
You will find instances of "chinese writing" all over asia just like you find instances of spanish in the carriabian and south america and english all over the northern hemisphere. China is THE top dog in asia when it comes to all matters political, economic, and spiritual. It always has been, always will be. It is just too big not to be.

I've never seen an "easy" timing belt. I hate these damn things. When the engine is a V-6 shoved in sideways w/ 4 cams it sucks even harder. Don't know if the motor in question is like that or not. Yes, I do understand the importance of replacing a belt in time, I just try to avoid cars that require such expensive service. Pushrods, oh how I miss thee....
