I know he is getting a shiney new destroyer, but this guy needs to be a shoe in for when the next carrier named enterprise is commissioned.
On a related note, when did destroyers become the length of WW2 cruisers?

When destroyers and cruisers became essentially the same thing. The funny thing is modern destroyers probably pack more firepower than a WW2 battleship.
I believe modern destroyers are primarily anti-submarine and cruisers are anti-air so size really isn't much of a consideration. In the olden days, cruisers where a "gap filling" ship that had to out gun destroyers and out run battleships so size was pretty relevant.
I sure hope he can take it in good humor. All the Cap'n Kirk reactions would have to get old eventually.
Please, please, please let the Chief Engineer be scottish...

Hmm, that is true.....but still, 600ft long with the draft of a ww2 battleship.....

Some battlecruisers were actually just as big as the battleships, but packed less armour and firepower. My great Uncle was assigned to the USS Alaska as WW2 ended. The Alaska was only 79 feet shorter than the USS New Jersey and still carried 9 12" guns as compared to the Jersey's 9 16" guns

That made me LOL. I totally missed that when I saw the pics early, but you're right - yes they did indeed.
