More people have been killed by Pitbulls than kids dying in hot cars. 52% of the people killed by Pitbulls were family members. Pitbulls are only responsible for 27% of reported dog bite incidents but 66% of reported fatalities.
Fact of the matter: Dogs bite, Pitbulls do much, much more damage because they were designed that way. When I was an insurance agent I liked to read the claims that came in over the fax and also favorited news articles about dog incidents. I'm not an Actuary but noticed recurring themes. Big dogs mostly injure people by being friendly - they jump up and knock over old people and break hips. Pitbulls mostly snap from stimuli and grip and shake like alligators.
Once I was at Lime Rock Park watching a race and a guy was walking around with a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Next to me was a black guy. I saw the Ridgie before the he saw the dude next to me so I got to see the hair in the dog's back bristle. Do you think the dog's owner was a racist?
Dogs will be dogs.

Some Pit bulls are prone to seizures later in life. It's a genetic defect. Our neighbors had one that was a great dog until it snapped one day. It killed the little Boston Terrier that has been its "brother" for 8 years.
My neighbors were good dog owners and had been treating the Pit with seizure medication for about a year before it went off the rails.
