Desire paths are fascinating.

There is a huge open area called The Oval at Ohio State U. The university looked at the paths in the snow and added sidewalks the next spring.

That's a statistician's dream assignment but we'd need a measure of traffic (not just path / no path) to do a good job.
I've already spent several minutes staring at that picture thinking about the "berk it" point...you know, the point where a student decides "berk-it" the cost of forging a new, optimal path is less than the cost of using an existing, inefficient path.
I'd love to see a time lapse of the paths as the snow gets deeper...that would be very telling.
Anyway, thank you, very interesting opportunity to apply our craft.

Bruce Campbell has, if you paint the word "cast" with a very wide brush.
He was filming a show in NZ at the same time and needed just one horse. Couldn't get one for love nor money. To this day he claims he has boycotted all LOTR media

I see two highly successful athletes wearing clothes the establishment of the time hated, and thought less of them for. The biggest difference is that those who appreciated Hunt in the era, are many of the same dinosaurs who now think Lewis is silly. The other big difference is one did so much coke his heart gave out at 45, while the other has seven championships and is starting on a new phase of his career.

This is the Meme thread. These are jokes to be laughed at.
The Butthurt thread is elsewhere.

Yeah, i don't get that brand of humor either. Its like the marriage post above, if your marriage is that E36 M3ty... get out of it.
If the person you are with doesn't bring you joy, why are you with them?
Spending the rest of your life with your person should be endeaRING
^I think that's left over from when people were all getting married at like 19 because of social norms then regretted it as they got older.

A coworker was telling about a similar scenario at Virginia tech. Over time more and more sidewalks were added to mimic the flow of students. Eventually there were so many origins/destinations around the green space that the paths were diverse enough not to damage the grass and sidewalks were no longer needed.
I have no idea if that story is true.

Hi Travis,
Do you think it even matters if the story is true or not...it makes the important point about giving careful consideration to defining the objective(s) before jumping into the math.
I was only concerned with achieving the best transit time to cost ratio...no consideration of keeping the grass healthy or anything else.
Anyway, I found myself thinking about how I would go after the assignment on my drive to work today. First, I'd calculate ideality (everyone gets a perfect straight shot between buildings regardless of the to and from) and from that, all proposals would be expressed in terms of percent efficiency (i.e., this system is 87% perfect, this system is 91% perfect, etc.)
Sorry, gotta' go for now.
