I've already spent several minutes staring at that picture thinking about the "berk it" point...you know, the point where a student decides "berk-it" the cost of forging a new, optimal path is less than the cost of using an existing, inefficient path.
A coworker was telling about a similar scenario at Virginia tech. Over time more and more sidewalks were added to mimic the flow of students. Eventually there were so many origins/destinations around the green space that the paths were diverse enough not to damage the grass and sidewalks were no longer needed.
I have no idea if that story is true.
Well, your coworker is feeding you a load of BS. As is Google Maps by putting a 2025 imagery date in this image that shows additional paths being worn into the grass on the Drillfield at Virginia Tech (most readily seen to the left of the path in front of Williams Hall). There is no way the grass is that green in Bleaksburg in January and I believe they have had two snow events so far this year...
