Let's not forget those who paid the ultimate sacrifice this day!

I can't explain why that bothers me so. When our son was little and I tried to explain to one of his friends that in every war someone gets so shot up, so mangled that they are can't be identified. One soldier from each war is inside the Tomb; now, back home, mothers whose kid never came back, Mom can say he's in there.

Explaining it my eyes welled up, lip quivers, every time; I don't get it.

Please remember why you get today off.

That of course, is the whole point of Memorial Day.

Veterans Day is to honor veterans, Memorial Day is for those who have died in service. I think many mix this up (just saw a local news thing about a gas station giving out fuel to veterans, I don think they understand it)

I think this pictures pretty much sums it up:

Amen to the explanation of the difference between today, and Veterans' Day above. I was thanked for my past service by many who know me for the last couple of days. I struggled with whether to say anything or not about the distinction between these days, but elected not to as I really appreciate the overwhelming support for our country's Service Members, but still ....

In reply to Beer Baron: I saw that in person a short time ago. Impressive.

The whole visit to Arlington is almost overwhelming.

I do usually wish my veteran friends well on Memorial Day, but I also make sure to say something like "I'm grateful that you're here to honor the day as well" so they know that I understand the difference between May and November.

I saw a number of posts yesterday talking about the difference between Memorial and Veterans day, and most made it sound like it was inappropriate to thank me for my service on Memorial Day.

berkeley that. I'm never going to be incensed that someone thanks me for my service, no matter what day it is. I'll simply say thank you.
