Wow, awesome write-up. Thanks for the pro-tips.
Equally important car-related beard tips:
Don't use oils or balms if you're going to be working on a car without cats. The smell from the exhaust will soak into your beard and you will not be able to escape it. Everyone you are near will say "oh god did you just cut grass or something?" or "Jesus you smell like gas!" You're going to smell either way, but at least try to get a head start on not being the smelly bearded guy.
Whenever you are leaning over a running engine bay, TUCK IT IN. I always tuck my beard into my shirt when I'm setting timing on a car or listening to an engine noise. You do NOT want to get a beard stuck in a fan or belt, trust me.
Convertibles can be hard at times. My beard comes up and smacks me in the face or I look like a sheep dog with his head out the window. Tuck it in your shirt or use the seat belt to hold it down.
Shave your neck and cheeks. This has nothing to do with cars, but don't look homeless. It gives other bearded guys a bad wrap. Keep that E36 M3 trimmed and it will continue to grow.

many many yrs ago I let mine grow uncontrolled ... as in huge ... for the last 10 yrs of so I've kept it cut using the second closest attachment on my clippers ... I've decided to let it go again ... just to see what it's like again
don't know how long I'll let it go ... we'll see ... already gotten some strange looks and questions from folk I hadn't seen in a few months ... that's been fun LOL
when I was in the Navy my beard was upwards to 3 - 5" longer ... and after I got out, it was sometimes maybe 6 - 7" longer ... then (like I posted above somewhere) I kept it clipped at maybe 1/2" - 3/4" ... I'm letting it go for a while ... I'll see how long I can let it go before I holler uncle

Looks good. Mine's starting to whiten up and I wish it would just go and get it over with already. I much prefer the "santa" look to the patchwork I have going right now.
