I notified my insurer that I moved to Michigan. Great.

Since it's MI and their crazy no-fault laws I can't get an online quote, so a quote comes in the mail. Great.

Was $653 in old state now is $934. Okay, coulda been worse.

But then I see all these additional pages of questions or options. I have no idea what to choose here:

Personal Injury Protection coverage (PIP):

Option 1. Coordinate the medical expense and work loss for a reduction of the non-deductible PIP rate.

Or, option 2. Coordinate the medical expense for a reduction of the non-deductible PIP rate.

3. Coordinate the work loss for a reduction of the non-deductible PIP rate.

4. I prefer that my PIP on my auto insurance be the primary coverage.

All 4 have a sub-option of a. non-deductible PIP, $300 deductible, $500 deductible

Then there's a note at the bottom, "if you select a coordinated coverage and you have no other health insurance then that's fraud or misrepresentation"

So do I need to check with my health insurance provider to find out if I'm covered by them in the event of an accident?

First rule of Michigan insurance is don’t talk about Michigan insurance.

just kidding, I don’t live there but hopefully someone else will chime in. One of my employees brought his insurance stuff to work so I could help him fill it out (not much of a family) and I was googling that stuff like mad to figure out what was going on.

edit: I live south of the border and some of my team lives on your side of the border.

I've lived in MI my entire life and I can't give you any advice other than read you policy contracts carefully and talk to your agent.

In reply to P3PPY :

I'm not in Michigan either but maybe talk to your co-workers.  They are likely to have the same health insurance that you have and they are likely to own a car.

It is also probably best to speak with a Michigan based agent.  Since your current company had to send you info via mail, they too likely had to speak to a Michigan based agent to get your answers.

Been in MI my whole life. Insurance is a crime here. Honestly, I would google each of those items so you fully understand what you’re getting yourself into.

What city are you moving to?

*Takes a deep breath, as this topic infuriates me*

Also a lifelong Michigan resident, and I don’t completely understand what they are asking.

My best guess at a translation would be: in the event of an accident, which insurance do you want to be the primary?  If you choose the auto insurance to be primary, how much do you want the deductible to be?

I don’t recall ever being presented with these options when choosing coverage.

*Edit: the topic of insurance in Michigan is what I find maddening, as my fellow Michiganders alluded to here.  I’m happy to discuss it in a civil manner though cheeky

DrBoost, I moved to the Lansing area, Holt, specifically, at the end of last year. I guess since I'm a resident now it's up to me to work to change the laws....Soooo is anyone here a go-getter about changing laws??

I think your description makes the most sense, paranoid_iPhone. John Welsh, I have opted to purchase private insurance.

*shakes fist at Michigan*
