I like my mindless violence with a bit of sword fighting

Prayers at Sikh Temple in New York erupt in sword fight

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A leadership dispute that turned violent at a Sikh temple in New York, interrupting prayers with swinging swords and cricket bats, landed congregants in court on Monday on criminal charges, a prosecutor said.

Amid screaming, yelling, punching and the swinging of weapons, followers of the two men who each claim to be the rightful president of the Baba Makhan Shah Lobana Sikh Center in Richmond Hill set upon each other on Sunday morning, according to court documents filed by the Queens District Attorney's office.

Eight men were arrested on various charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and disruption of a religious service, police said. A police officer suffered minor injuries during the brawl.

"It's shameful for everybody," said Gurmej Singh, who said he was elected as president effective at the beginning of the year. "This is a religious place where we go for peace and people are ready to be killing each other. I feel bad."

He said that his rival for the presidency, Jarnail Singh, arrived with a gang of followers carrying weapons early on Sunday morning and waited inside the temple and started shouting at and attacking worshipers as they arrived, threatening to kill them.

Jarnail Singh denies initiating the violence. By his account, he and his supporters had arrived early at the temple for "peaceful prayer." He had notified police in advance after hearing rumors that there might be a confrontation.

"Everybody got bleeding, everybody got stitching, everybody got to hospital, but they arrest my side only," he told Reuters. He said five of the eight men arrested were on his side.

Jarnail Singh, who was the undisputed president of the temple, or gurudwara, in 2010, says his term continues until the end of this year. He has filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court.

He says he is facing opposition because he wants to make the gurudwara more democratic and give everyone a vote in important matters typically decided by a small committee.

Gurmej Singh says his opponent wants to stay in office because of the power and influence the leadership position holds.

An officer in the community policing department that covers the neighborhood said the police would not make any public comments on the dispute.

, how would those girls know she wasn't just a particularly masculine woman (which might be the result of a medical condition, effects of medication, or just the way she is)? Did they reach up and check the equipment before pummeling her into a seizure? That whole thing was pretty sickening to watch and it kinda gives me chills to hear anyone even begin to make excuses for it.

Actually, not sure if you saw, but the photos of the victim show her to be quite convincingly feminine. Someone ignorant enough to beat someone for being a transvestite would never have noticed that she wasn't female in the first place.

We'll probably never know the whole story.

I agree, from the video and her side of the story, there was no way that was part of the problem. I just consider it a non issue.

There are places in Africa and South America that I would love to see though there is so much trouble in the areas it could be rather risky. Heck some areas we send researchers they are required to have military escort.

We do a lot of work in South Africa, and I can assure you that you do not want to visit there for fun. We have to hire armed escorts for our personnel while they are there, and to escort our products to the end users. We had a local woman working for us, and she would have to tape her purse to her body in order to not have it stolen as she walked to work, 15 miles each way. She lived in a shack made out of cardboard boxes and whatever steel panels her family could find. All of it together measured about 6 by 6 feet, for a family of I think 8. It's absolutely heart breaking there. People here have no idea what being poor really is.

Many of the people there are extremely nice, but poverty is beyond anything we can imagine. The sad part is that 20 plus years ago this was an entirely different country, one that had much lower crime and poverty rates. The man that now owns our company (we were bought out recently) came to the US from SA in the early '90's with just the clothes on his back. If he had stayed he would have been killed. As it was, the new government took everything he had. Corruption is of course rampant, and you simply cannot trust people unless you really get to know them, and then you still have to be careful.

It is however a nice place visually, with wildlife we only read about. But there is one road they adivse you not to drop below 50kph as there is a species of snakes there that can and will jump into your car as you move. No kidding. We did double that just to be safe!

Please note: I didn't say "God hates transvestites," just that man dressed up as girl in girl's restroom does not equal girl in girl's restroom. Also relevant because now the chicks who beat said man in girl's clothes may be charged with a "Hate crime," (additional 10 years in jail and $10,000 fine,) even though it sounds (according to dude's account of the incident) like they didn't know it was a guy either.

Poop: I know, I didn't mean it like that (I think we generally have a mutual respect thing anyway) - and this is not going to turn into a hate-crime thread. I just meant that it was not relevant to the chilling lack of humanity displayed by the attackers in any of the cases.

What we really need is more mindful violence in this country. Too many people are beating the crap out of each other without really meaning it. Nobody brutally assaults people with real conviction anymore.
