Are we talking the Full Montero or the Montero Sport. The "Sport" is more of a posser but the full version is pretty stout in a LandCruiser sort of way.
There used to be a 2 door version as well that was also sold as the Dodge Raider.

The sport version is actually really capable. I've seen some crazy built rigs from australia on Expo.
edit: Wasn't the sport body on frame as well. as the new monty is unibody.
Sam Memmolo once said changing the heater core in one of them is the worse job you would ever do. I don't know what model it was.
thats the 2 door which is the same thing as the diahatsu (sp?) rocky, which is also the same thing as the mitsu pajero sold everywhere but here, right?
Yes, certainly looks like it. Elsewhere the 4 door is also badged as a Pajero, and the 'Sport' known as a Challenger or Shogun sport.
Though similar in dimentions, I do not think there is a link between the Rocky and the Montero

Dent Sport Garage (a MA-based tuning company) has a sick Dodge Raider/Mitsu Montero short wheel base with a 1JZGTE swapped in. The owner uses it as a winter-beater and tow vehicle for thier project cars. They also ditched the front and rear bumpers for the "rally raid" look. Not sure how feasable an engine swap would be for you, but just for inspiration I'll post links to DSG's articles.

I always thought the Montero was the larger version and the little Samurai looking thing was something else.
Price is right, I may swap it for something I will use.

The rest of the world got good diesel versions. The market for mitsubishi diesel engine in the US is pretty low, unlike ones for toyotas. I'll bet you could swap it to an oil burner for a few grand and have a really great fuel efficent machine.
I had an '88 (bought new) Raider/Montero that looked almost identical to this one:
Sturdy vehicle, but this vintage ruuuuusts. Dunno about newer ones. Worn idler arm bushings can make for a pretty spectacular shimmy. Rear suspension creaked and I was never able to make it totally go away. Mine had a funky "inclinometer" on the dash to supposedly tell you when you were about to tip over and the drivers seat has its own suspension system that can be adjusted firm/soft. Overall, mine was pretty decent.

Montero or Montero Sport?
Wife has a 2002 Montero Sport, we bought it back when she was fresh out of college and we didn't know any better than to plunk down $$$$$ on a shiny new depreciation-mobile. Our financial illiteracy notwithstanding- it's fortunately been a remarkably durable/reliable vehicle. She came to me a week or so ago to tell me the heater wasn't working. Hmm. Honey, that's because there's no coolant in it. How long has it been like this? A week? Holy isht, you're kidding, right? .... Never overheated (I guess because it was wintertime), amazingly caused no other problems- knock wood. Cracked plastic radiator end tank, replaced, refilled, no problems. That's pretty much the only problem out of almost 100k and 8 years, and a strong argument for operator error is in there.
Montero Sport shared 3.5L V6 with the Montero on XLS and Limited models from 2002ish on, and we have a 2WD XLS. It's a little thirsty (20ish mpg highway), but for a body-on-frame truck, it's not so bad. Probably tows OK, though I'd imagine fuel economy goes way down. Parks kind of like a boat- turning circle is huge. Handles like a jacked up truck with a car body stuck on, because that's what it is.
Montero was the big brother, it's the one that Dateline or whoever decided to run the "expose" on to illustrate how easy it is to flip an SUV.
I've had two 91 Monteros(Monteri?) and a 2002 XLS. My son crashed the first '91- Thankfully they are built better than Sherman tanks. The "02 got sold after Mrs Mini got her a 911 for a toy and I just sold the second '91(readers rides) because two people really don't need 6 cars and 2 motorcycles. Great for towing, playing in the woods, traveling, hauling, or anything else you would want to do. The little 4-banger two door ones are pretty underwhelming, though. The bigger 4-door models are built.- skid plates all over(actually all-under), heavy full frames, and a neat tilt-o-meter on the dash!
