So I was wondering if homemade E85 (aka moonshine ) would carry an aroma through combustion the same way that greasel cars smell like french fries or donuts or whatever the oil has in it? I know the catalyst would probably mess with the smell, but what about a cat-less car?

Never noticed a difference in smell in the cars of the shiners I've known who ran it.

I HAVE noticed a difference in exhaust at the grand prix of st. pete in years past...the indy cars running 10% ethanol, 90% methanol have a distinctive smell when compared to the ALMS cars. That's probably due to the methanol, though....as anybody at a drag strip knows, methanol (well, nitrometh) smells sweet.

hmmmmm... I wonder if there's a loophole in the law to allow one to distill your own fuel.....probably not.

Best check with the T-men on that.

Buncha cars running around here uncorked. It definitely smells sweeter, and has a tendency to burn the eyes, same way a good race fuel would.

If you get the permits, it is legal

(I suspect that assembling the still with lead solder helps, since so they know that you can't use it for drinking.)

I looked into this a while back and decided that it was probably not worth it, though...most setups don't produce a high volume of alcohol to be a viable fuel source. Also, stills require a heck of a lot of cooling water....so much that doing this becomes cost prohibitive. If you have a lake or stream on your property, your math may be different from mine.

These guys sell complete setups that look like a gas pump

They try to keep the cost down by importing non-food-grade sugar from Brazil. I'm guessing that they still don't have many buyers at $40K/pump

(BTW, my plan was an E100 powered Studebaker Lark dragster. I thought it would be fun to have an alcohol burning version of the cop cars that were used to chase moonshiners.)

Appleseed beat me to it. There was a guy with the St. Louis Region SCCA who had a purple Neon that belched grape scented fumes and was faster around the cones than any Neon should be.

If they had that stuff in BBQ rib scent I'll bet deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning would skyrocket!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnd I'm hungry again...
