Thieves Arrested After Stealing 6M Pounds of Maple Syrup
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers believe several million cans of stolen maple syrup may be sitting on U.S. grocery shelves.
Quebec police arrested four men in connection with the robbery of 6 million pounds of maple syrup stolen from a Canadian warehouse in a heist spanning just under a year.
The thieves managed to steal the sticky substance from a warehouse in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford between August 2011 and July of this year. The stolen syrup tops out at $18 million in total market value.
"It's one of the most important robberies in Quebec because of the quantity stolen and the value of the syrup," said Sgt. Gregory Gomez Del Prado of Quebec police.
Quebec police arrested Stephan Darveau on Wednesday, after arresting three others on Tuesday, linking all four to an ongoing investigation.
Hey now, Maple Syrup is one of the most expensive liquids on Earth.

Trust me, we're not laughing about the guns. It freaks us right the berkeley out.
Have you checked the price of that stuff in the grocery store? Not the maple-flavored HFCS crap, the real deal. It's like liquid gold.
Having grown up on the cheap, fake, sugar and food coloring stuff, I don't actually like real Maple Syrup. Sorry Canada.

Aldi prices are reasonable.

I had to google "aldi" to figure out what it was. Never heard of 'em, and apparently they have a store just up I-95 in Fredericksburg.
And define "reasonable." Anything over 99 cents for a bottle of syrup is just plain ridiculous!
Sure sounds like those fellers got themselves into a sticky situation....

No E36 M3. $7 for 12oz.... And when it is either that or honey to sweeten a recipe. UGH....

The USofA produces "may be" 10% of the worlds supply of maple syrup. Quebec? 75+%. You also have to consider that Quebec has setup a cartel similiar to OPEC in regards to maple syrup production (I E36 M3 you not). Pricing is fixed by the regulator, and the provincial Quebec government is 100% behind them. Hence why I am sure maple syrup is cheaper in the US (and Ontario for that matter). I can't get syrup on sale cheaper than $7.99 for 500ml.
The more you know...

Warning, rant coming on!
HiTempguy is absolutely right about the syrup cartel. I am a Quebecer born and raised, but this kind of E36 M3 really gets my juices pumping. We've got to be the worst place in America for these kind of little Cartels. Everyone has one. There are so many groups like that over here, it's ridiculous. For example, they have a similar little cartel for the production of milk. Every producer as a quota that he must respect, for which he will be paid a certain amount, blah blah blah. So you have guys that dump hundreds of gallons of milk in the ditch because the cows have exceeded their quota. Unreal...
End of rant.
I will say that nothing compares to some real, high grade, maple syrup. My father use to make some, and god I miss it.

Aldi is the largest grocer in the world! They also own Trader Joe's.
Syrup lasts so long around my house that it's not worth it to buy the cheap stuff. I would rather have it taste good than be cheap. Kind of like beer. Enjoy less quantity of good stuff instead of swilling more cheap stuff. Swilling cheap syrup makes me antsy in my pantsy.
If you've ever been involved in producing maple syrup, you'd understand that it's never going to be super-cheap, regardless of cartel status. It can only be harvested under very specific weather conditions for a short period, and it takes about 40-50 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. 99 cents a bottle? It's gonna be a small bottle.
Going to visit a sugar shack is part of every childhood if you grow up in a certain geographic area. Imagine, a busload of little kids full of maple taffy running around in the snowy woods - mayhem.
I buy mine in the farmer's market in Ottawa - you can get tourist-grade decorative bottles, but the best deals are to buy a case of tin cans. The last batch of amber I got was the most delicious syrup I've ever tasted. I think I've still got about a case and a half left, time to restock.
Fake maple syrup is the devil. And stay away from that stuff they sell at Cracker Barrel, they claim it's real but it tastes like Aunt Jemima with a bit of fake maple extract.

Hickory Syrup. Do recommend.
I buy only local made syrup.
NYS maple syrup is better than VT or Canada.

You are right that it can never be as cheap as the sweetened water available everywhere in the states. You can collect the sap for about 1-2 months per year in spring and it does take about 40-50 gallons of sap for every gallon of syrup. But it's not the most difficult thing to set-up: you need a forest, a boiler and if you're lazy, a couple miles of rubber tubing. Everybody from Quebec has at least one family member who produces their own syrup. What infuriates me is that the price is kept artificially high.
Most expensive liquid? I'm sure it's nowhere near inkjet printer ink or that high-end wax that's $6k per tube.

Amen, brother. Can I get a WITNESS!!! (old skool Southern baptist prayin'. )

I have helped make maple syrup. I love going out to a friends farm that has been in their family for about 150 years. They tap about 400 trees. The boiler is heated with wood from the sugar bush. This photo is the boiler
