For some reason, when I saw their photos, it was like looking back in time, and into an old Popular Mechanics.

Jony Ive actually spent some time studying automotive design, though he left because other students were "making vrooming noises" whilst drawing. Ive actually has a somewhat reasonable car collection, even if little or nothing would be GRM.
Apple Watch looks like a watch. The iPod had proportions similar to a walkman. The iOS had skeuomorphism in their apps for the first several years, so apps like Notes actually looked like a notebook. I have a feeling that, if Apple makes a car, it will look like a car.
Apparently Motor Trend did not scoop anything, they just made it all up.

Considering Apple's obsession with making things thin, this is probably more likely:
