Current bank is back 3hrs away. Need something closer. I have it narrowed down to either the scumbags at suntrust or 5/3. Pros/cons?
Dont mention the local CU... They are stuck in the 50's on speed and fees.

You got a mattress, right?
You might as well stuff it in there for what banks are paying in interest.
Online banking? Discover has very good CD rates, interest checking, etc.

Swmbo doesn't need access to it.
I don't care about interest, money never stays around long enough to even gain a penny.
Suntrust was easy to deal with on a truck loan, have no experience with 5/3 even though they’re everywhere here
The only thing I know about either of those banks is their racing sponsorships, so...which livery do you like better?
Does the local CU have an ATM and is a member of the shared branch network?
If so, maybe look into a better CU that also uses shared branching and is a bit more modern. Unfortunately Penfed doesn't seem to be a member of the co-op shared branch network anymore as I found out recently. I still use the same CU we joined in NV.

ATM? What's that?
5/3 was the bank that never noticed the horse lady was stealing $54,000,000 from the city of Dixon, IL. I'd stay far away.
My problem with 5/3 is that I don't want to trust my money to a financial institution that can't reduce a fraction. It should be 1 2/3.
Are those the only two banks in your new area? It will depend on how you do your banking and how you spend money - for me, a bank that's national makes more sense, that way most anywhere I go I can find a local branch if needed.

Rather than being snide about it, the civil response would have been to say, "no, I don't use ATM machines." He was trying to be helpful.
My accounts are at BofA. My Dad’s are at Synovus. I manage them both.
While I’m not a big fan of BofA corporate, their online tools and mobile apps are incredible.
I didn’t think I cared that much until I tried to use Synovus tools (which suck)

It’s not “five thirds”. It’s “fifth third”.
It is derived from the names of the their two predecessor companies, Third National Bank and Fifth National Bank.

It wasn't meant be be snide. I just meant that it doesn't cross my mind when your debit card has V/MC in it and you can pay for your crap and take out even more money when you pay. The only time I use one is when I need to make a deposit. Even then, now you can take photos of the check and it's put into your account automatically.
As to way those two, they both have branches in my relative area, with 5/3 holding my one auto loan. I mean I could do like Ally too, but completely online is still a tough sell when problems arise.
In reply to Ranger50 :
You can pay by debit card but I wouldn't. Too much danger of the card details falling into the wrong hands and then you end up with an empty account while the bank takes its own sweet time to maybe restore your funds.
For me, the closest (shared) branch that works with my CU is about 45 minutes away and only open during normal business hours. The other place we still have accounts with (BoA) is over an hours away. Neither is a problem until you need to deposit cash.

There is one more possibility: That he honestly doesn't know what an ATM is. Unlikely, I know. But if that were the case, the Snide Award would go to you!

Direct deposit and paying for E36 M3.
Discover Bank. Online. Cashback Debit is a checking account that will pay you 1% for your spending. No fees. You can set it up online from the convenience of your home. Excellent US-based customer service. I've had an account with them since the nineteen hundred eighties.

It is?...What kinds of problems are you expecting that second rate brick and mortar banks will be better equipped to handle than a first rate online banks?

I guess I like a real person I can talk to face to face and not have a 2 dimensional conversation with a person who doesn't give a rats rearend of my problem. Call me old school then.
I no longer bank with “too big to fail” banks. My local CU (Georgia’s Own) actually is the answer for me. Excellent and secure online services including two factor login security and mobile check deposit. Local branches near my office and home with real humans, who are interested and available to help.
And networked ATM at every Publix supermarket (I rarely shop there because Aldi, but locations are everywhere in the southeast if I should need an ATM)
