Last night, Netflix recommended me this documentary of Muscle Shoals, Alabama and "The Muscle Shoals Sound." I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would recommend it here.
You should find the trailer here:

I am no music scholar. I knew that some music was recorded there but had no idea why there and certainly had no idea just how much.
R&B, Country, Rock, Pop, etc.
Years later it became the birthplace of Southern Rock and much, much more.

Interesting facts:
In England, the first recordings that each The Beatles and The Stone made were cover songs. The irony, they were both remakes of Muscle Shoals songs though neither knew where they were recorded.

Give it a try and turn up the volume on the surround sound.

I'll second that! I thought it was great.

On that same vibe:

  • "20 feet from Stardom" is a great documentary about backup singers.
  • "Sound City" is Dave Grohls documentary about the famous studio in LA
  • "It might get loud" with Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge talk about music.

"It might get loud" was on Crackle. You can get Crackle for free, and it's available on PS3. That's how I watched it.

I bought Sound City. The 20 feet from stardom is on Netflix, though.

My old boss used to work there when Joe Walsh owned (at least partially) it. It's tied in with the Alabama Music Hall of Fame now, as the guy that runs that was a producer at Muscle Shoals Sound, and we used to produce all the video for the induction ceremonies. The history of the place is very interesting, but I did not know about "Muscle Shoals Sound". Thanks for the heads up!

I found the full version of "It Might Get Loud" on youtube and watched last night.

It is good but there is some oddity.
The Edge comments about what rock had become in the late 70's and said he weeped for the industry when he watched Spinal Tap because it was much more true that it was humorous. I could only think that it was sort of like saying Led Zep was too much like Spinal Tap and sort of insulted Led Zep in general (though it may be true.)

It did become very evident that Jimmy Page is clearly the "elder statesman" of his craft. He is the icon of icons. This became very evident at the 55-56 minute mark of the movie. I would say this was the high point and the essence of the whole film. JPage picks up the guitar to riff and you can see on the faces of the other two that they are in awe to be in his presence.
If you watch nothing, at least watch the 55 minute portion.

I was a huge U2 fan starting in 1981. I did not really care for much of what they did after the album War. To me, War, is their highpoint and the rest decline. I like the "raw-ness" of their first two albums, Boy and October. I found it interesting that most of what they featured of The Edge was his earliest work (which jives with my thinking.)

It might get loud is added to the watch list. Does anybody know if Muscle Shoals or Sound City are on Youtube?

Muscles Shoals has got the Swampers.
They've been known to pick a song or two.

Pick me up when I'm feelin' blue.

I did not know that much about Jack White.
I am familiar with his hits and here, Detroit Radio (his home town) always gave him a lot of airplay.
I had no idea that it is a two member band!
I knew he was a bit eccentric.
I did not know that the two member band was billed as a "brother-sister" act. It was later relieved it was his wife, not sister.
I am currently playing this White Stripes concert in the background.
