Music at Work (No Tragically Hip inside)

So, at work, I have to be somewhat sneaky with my music. The production team isn't allowed music, for safety reasons. I'm across the street, in my little office, and I usually have th radio playing. This morning, I grabbed my Shuffle. With the wrong music to work by.

In sales, I have to be a nice guy. What's on my shuffle you ask? NWA's Straight Outta Compton, Korn (older, cannot remember the album, and the shuffle has no screen), Ministry's Rantology, NIN (again older), Black Label Society's Alcohol Fueled Brewtality. And those are just the bands on it whose lyrics you can easily decipher. I'm having trouble not strangling people that continue to ask for things that they have been told repeatedly aren't going to happen. I can't wait until 4:30 hits.

Sadly in my plant every radio is turned up painfully loud, each on a different "work safe" radio station. Walking from my office to the fab shop I was assaulted by brian adams "summer of 69", elton john's "candle in the wind", some horrible female pop/country thing and worst of all James Taylor's disgusting "How sweet it is"

That is why I feel like punching someone

We're stuck with the local crap channel that thinks Miley Cyrus is the greatest thing since, well... Kelly Clarkson. See where this is headed?

There are currently three other people in the office. I'm the only prole in cube-city. I doubt anyone can hear my music. I use Pandora Radio, and it plays a mix of recommendations based on my bizarre, eclectic, and sordid tastes. I figure Tango Music, Trip Hop, Blues, Funk, and Classic Rock are Kosher... but I frequently turn it down or skip ahead when it plays Tool, NIN, or Manson.

Actually that's not true. I let it play Tool, I turn down NIN, and I may or may not skip ahead when it plays Manson or other things it figures I'll like, such as Godsmack or Rob Zombie.

I really like Pandora Radio actually. The idea is that you input songs/artists that you like and it automatically plays related music. You can they tell it when you do or do not like a song. My initial lineup I inputed was: Astor Piazzola, Gotan Project, Cake, Beck, Tool, Portishead, Radiohead, the Doors, and Fionna Apple. I've added other since. I have a weird station.

Admit it guys, you would probably still want to strangle somebody either way. You'd be wanting to strangle somebody because you couldn't listen to music, or because you were listening to music and they interrupted an awesome air guitar solo with work related questions, or you'd notice something in a song that you hadn't before and you'd want to strangle yourself for having not noticed the first 197 times you heard the song.

I worked in an office in the summer of 1995 where the radio was always on a ocal country station. After hearing "Any Man of Mine" by Shania Twain 6 or 7 times a day for 5 weeks straight, I knew all the words and never wanted to hear it again in my life.

I have a policy since then that my coworkers can listen to what ever they like, ON HEADPHONES.

Pandora is awesome. No tunes for me at work other than what some co workers listen to. Makes me feel like I'm in an old tavern. Which is OK, really.

Pandora rocks, though, but some real classics have been stricken by their licensing agreements, like F the Police and Rainbow in the Dark by DIO.

Another streaming radio is radioparadise.com. Its a radio station, it doesn't play to taste unless its your taste, but its mine and maybe its yours so check it out.

we get our music piped in here at the Casinos.. no choice in the manner even though I work in the department that controls the station.

Today I heard THE worse cover of "sympathy for the devil" the girl singing it really emphasized all the wrong points in the song.

In my last place of work (in a cube farm) I either played some of the 30gigs of music I have on my laptop or I streamed NPR. At least I could learn something

Hehe when I was working at the Porsche dealer detailing cars I had the far back bay that was walled off so I could wash them as well. I had a rather ancient boom box that I had wrapped in several layers of plastic shrink wrap and played whatever I wanted.

At my last job I was sitting at a desk all day long...I was allowed to bring my laptop into work. This meant I spent most of my day surfing the net on an open connection for my department and when I wasn't doing that I was watching movies or listening to music on the laptop. I did all this while talking to customers on the phone and never missing a beat. I guess once you have been doing something for 8 years and its the same things time after time you kinda know it without even thinking about it.

I have been listening to a lot of George Clinton recently. The other day my supervisor came over and tried to tell me something (I have been trying to get fired before I quit) and I had Gunbroker.Com fullscreened and had Lil Jon on full crank. He was like "I see you are busy. I'll come back later.

We play pretty much anything we want - I've got about 80 GB of music on my computer at work and a few of my coworkers mooch off that. Out in the shop, we have Sirius. No matter what station we start off with, it always ends up back on the blues station. It's the only one we can stand.

Big points for the Hip reference.

I've got the Vintage 5 disc CD Player stocked with anything from the Rat Pack to the Soprano's soundtrack, Singers & Songwriter's,Brooks & Dunn, Eagles, Sinatra,Beatles,Billy Joel, U2 etc.

I work at home, so I have full musical author-itay.

Recently voted by the Onion A.V. Club as the least rockin' song of all time. I'm not entirely sure I agree with the criteria, but it's hard to make an argument against the results. It certainly does suck.

One person shop here so the only people I have to please are the voices in my head, I just turn it up to drown them out. I actually told a manager that one time, he just shook his head and walked away. The down side is I cant make out what is being said on the phone when there is any other noise so I hit mute alot. I am too cheap to buy an Ipod or similar (I don’t think my puter will support it) and have no line of sight outdoors so satellite is out. I am thinking about Digital Radio, Most stations in town are broadcasting on it now.
