We can buy the town.....make a multi-purpose track just outside of town.....where is Kim Basinger when we need her???

Oh trust me, I already have plans for a track outside town too. There's a pretty large tract about 1/2-mi outside of town that has an abandoned(and almost collapsed)RR Roundhouse on it. Last time I asked, the price was $125k. The surface - though now I'm sure it's all overgrown - is a nice finely-ground cinder. I think it would be great for rallyx!

Rallyx less than an hour from home sign me up. I assume this all means you won't be working here in Lafayette anymore. Although I noticed the other day, Wabash National has a big gravel lot on South Concord that is not being used and hasn't been for a couple months.

You're almost spittin distance from me. Well, not really, but it seems like there isn't many GRMers in central IL.

Isn't that how cults start? A bunch of like-minded "enthusiasts", sharing the same beliefs, living together in the one general area. Then the next thing you know, we're all attending services at the Paved Church of the Heavenly Cone.

Ahh, screw it. I'd totally live in GRMville.

Back on topic: that's an incredible purchase, Pete. Lovely old building, too. Good luck with the renovations and new business.

Thanks again everyone! I won't be quitting my day job, at least, not anytime soon. I know it will take time to get established, and I'll need the income to afford the remodelling!

Great score! It's great you're pursuing a dream....all it takes is a few more to capture the vision and the town can be turned around! I'd suggest concentrating on the living quarters for you and the clan first, then deal with setting up shop. Do you still plan to rent the house? That's a pretty full plate, so be careful you don't burn out. I've actually been through there while sightseeing and driving around aimlessly on a day off (I've done a lot of the nukes in IL.) Next time, I'll have to stop and lend a hand.

Maybe you should talk up Danville and Champaign. Birthplace of somebody.......Dick Van Dyke? Higher institutions of learning, prisons.

Gilman, Illinois has a sweet gas station/diner where the older waitresses still call you "honey".

Oh yeah, absolutely - anytime any of you are in the area - stop by!

Let's see, Danville: Birthplace of Dick & Jerry Van Dyke, Gene Hackman, Joe Tanner(Space Shuttle Commander, his mother was my pediatrician years ago). There's Danville Area Community College there, as well as the Lakeview School of Nursing. Also a state prison there.

Oh and Rossville residents get a choice of 2-different public High Schools for their kids.

Lol I really need to get a few of you to move here, maybe I'd finally have enough help & motivation to get a challenge car together!

Can you image a barn full of challengers, old metal tools and GRMville petrol heads, damn that would be the E36 M3 right there. The only thing more outrageous would be the aluminum can mountain out back.

petegossett wrote: BTW - there's more buildings for-sale. The one next door to mine & the 3 across the street can be had even cheaper. They've had new roofs & brickwork, but are basically bare shells....but I've been told $500 would buy any of them if you can show proof that you'll put in a business. There's a couple other more expensive buildings for-sale too, that are already open & in good condition. There's a 2-story that's presently a teen-club for ~$70k, and a fully operational bar for $125k. Anyone else want to come join the party???

Can you shut up, please? Pretty please?

My wife has a bit of a problem after the people she worked for "forgot" to apply for an extension of her funding and she's been talking about going to set up for herself instead[1].

What's the infrastructure like in your village, especially from a high-speed internet access point of view?

[1] In case anybody is wondering, my wife lives in the US...

Does a Brit have any problems getting a work permit in the US? Does anybody NOT have high speed internet available? I'm serious, there.

First, I'm not a Brit - I only live here . I'm actually German (hence the posting name).

The wife & me are working on getting the paperwork sorted out and her being currently unemployed doesn't help.

Over here, not all villages have high-speed internet so I thought this might a reasonable question...

There are plenty of places in the States that still do not have high-speed. My dad can only get satellite in his area; he opted for mobile broadband. Compared to my connection, it is SLOW.

We don't have residential DSL or Cable Internet, but there are several wireless providers with local antennae. I'm still trying to find out what other small businesses are using, though I know there are faster wireless packages available & the rates are reasonable. We're paying $40/mo & iirc they have the top package for $60. I don't remember the speeds offhand.

I figure if enough people open shop we could all share a T1.
