Well since we have a what pistol thread going figured I would post my latest acquisition. I know we have talked about old surplus rifles around here before.
This was actually a Valentines Day present from my girl friend and I just was able to pick it up last week when I was in Portland. It is a Mosin Nagant M44 with a 1955 production stamp on top of the receiver. After reading all of the stories about how the bolts can be sticky on these things I was kind of expecting the worst however the action on this particular rifle is dead smooth.
As you can see its in a aftermarket stock, I received the wood stock with all hardware as well though there is a crack in the wood stock I need to see if I can repair. Bayonet was intact though removed from lug when I first received it I put it back on just to see how it worked and all. The scope mount and scope was included in the package though not mounted. I mounted the scope last night and can't wait to give it a try, my uncle says he knows the perfect place for us to go test the gun. Ammo carrier also came with the deal. I had the collapsible bypod sitting in my closet so I mounted that up to see how it looked and will more than likely use it during first trials with the gun to see if I want to keep it on there or not. Only other thing I added was a new sling.
Anyway I can't wait to go give the rifle a try and might even try using it for hunting and it will become my regular stomping around the woods/mountains gun I think so long as it is accurate enough. I'm still going to try and hunt down a long barrel version when I can. I have some friends that go varmint hunting and are wanting me to bring it along once it is all sighted in, though I have a feeling it would be over kill
I would like to get an original wood stock to strip down and refinish it to replace the aftermarket stock. Anyway here it is in all its bubbaed glory.
