I figured I would start a new thread opposed to continuing the other one I started that pops up from time to time.
Anyways, I've been looking for rentals on and off for the last several months and have had no luck. I can't find any houses for rent around my area at all in my price range.
This past weekend, I helped move some stuff for my friend in the Army down to Smyrna, GA.
He got a huge 4 bed, 2.5 bath house for $1500 a month ($100 more than what I'm paying on a E36 M3ty 2 bed condo) on a huge lot. It's in a nice neighborhood and it's next to a lot of good retail. I don't usually get jealous over people moving into houses, but I honestly was.
I haven't looked for rentals in the last month, so I decided to start my search again today and once again, nothing.
For E36 M3s and giggles, I decided to look up houses for rent down in Smyrna, because my buddy told me about how many he looked at. I put in the same exact search that I use up here and I immediately find 12 houses in my criteria and about 3 that would be perfect.
What the hell.

Location, location, location. How many people want to live where he is, and how many want to live where you are?
In reply to Duke:
Nobody want's to live here.
Rents and avialability are driven largely by the job market in an area. If a lot of people are working and the pay rates are good, rents go up. If the job market sucks, rents go down.

Why not move towards KKK or Burr-ba-ney and buy something?

I've been looking in NW Indiana because I live 5 minutes from there. There is nothing for rent in my price range outside of the ghetto of Gary or Hammond.

I worked that area for 5 years. I have no interest in moving there.
I feel for you. Cheap apartments in bad areas start at around 800/month here. I have seen three bedroom houses that are not that special for go for 2400

That's the problem. I've set my limit to $1200 because that's really all I can afford and that's still high. I haven't be able to find anything under $1500. Anything I have found is a house that is falling apart or is a total E36 M3hole. Sorry, I'm not renting a house to fix it up for the landlord.
Low cost to support a nice lifestyle is the reason I moved back to metro Atlanta. Best of look with your decision.

Yeah, I was impressed how nice the Smyrna/Marietta are is.
Wow $1500 that is what my mortgage is including tax's. If you can some how swing it by a house. Yes it takes a while to find the rite one and the process can be a sob but in the long run you will be ahead.
There is renters credit and some states are trying to chip away at the homestead tax credit which if they take that away, home ownership isnt as lucrative for some.

My buddy is in the Army, so he isn't interested in owning a house again.
