I only read the first page, but the US scares me sometimes...

Just be glad the cold up there is enough to drive most of us away from your syrup
What are gun laws in Canada actually like? Not trying to flounder, I just never knew they were much different from our laws.
I mean, it's basically an entire country of forest, bears, and syrup, so why don't you all have guns?

Despite the cold, I am glad to to live somewhere where the only weapon I feel the need for is a sharp wit...

Honestly I have never felt the need to carry down here. I mean I will probably get my Conceal Carry Permit just cause iti s so easy but I doubt I will actually carry.

Rifles and shotguns are pretty easy to own, basic safety course and background check required. Handguns are basically restricted for range use and require a background check, a bunch of forms, and gun club membership. Full auto isn't going to happen (legally}. Hockey sticks are the self defense weapon of choice Police chases are a bit different here too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4baX8NfOEP0

"Need"? I don't either. But I'm the type that is likely to need a phillips when all I have is a torx.... so I like to be prepared.
Sometimes I wish there were basic safety courses that were necessary, but yes, that would be unconstitutional. You wouldn't believe how many times, while selling holsters, the conversation goes as such:
Me: Do you have your weapon with you?
Him: Yes, here it is.
Me: Is it unloaded?
Him: No
Me: Then could you not point it at me?
In reply to N Sperlo:
That is one thing I hate about it, I was taught young how to handle weapons, anyone I teach to shoot gets taught the proper handling before they even get to learn the simple fact of marksmanship followed by then being taught self defense. Part of me wishes that everyone had to go through(while in High School), a proficiency test on proper handling, accuracy, and cleaning/storage as part of the Selective Service Act....it would sure make drill instructors jobs easier in the event of a draft.
In reply to yamaha:
You have a very good point. Anyone who handles my weapons has to know howrst. Then again, I don't let many people handle them.

Sorry for the late reply, some of us have jobs....
It's not the object I fear, it's the mentallity.
If had to live in Murica....I'd carry a gun too!

Most people don't, some do......I think its because we have worse things than drive by disagreements down here.......btw

That's actually an early '90s Peavey Delta Blues 1x15. It's had a hard life.

So you don't like the idea of personal responsibility? Then I would be scared too if I were you.

Isn't it hard to lug that around all day?

Calm down, bro. Trolling isn't nice at GRM.
Personal responsibility on GRM forums includes keeping your cool and respecting others. Unless you want to be part of someones patio, that is.

Basically sums it up. In redneck of all redneck places, Alberta (and I hang around a LOT of rednecks), very few own any form of handgun. LOTS of rifles though, as half the population is either rural or from rural areas. Even then though, to see a rifle in the city is extremely rare.
Of course, how long was the "long gun" registration around for? That was insanely ridiculous. I think I've only heard a gunshot ONCE in my life in Canada (that wasn't from a rifle/hunting/range) and I've always lived in cities. Miami Florida? First 30 minutes I was there. Scariest part was there was no sirens afterwards
In reply to HiTempguy:
My guess would be, if no sirens, either nobody was hurt, or a crime was being committed and they didn't want to go to the hospital and subsequently jail.
Oddly enough, urban areas are the violent crime hotspots. Despite that most rural areas are where people who own firearms live.

And that's alright. I don't like guns, (ok, I think they're cool, but not in "real life") Your right that our country is a little less "intense", so the need for that kind of personal protection is not really warranted.
Having said that, I think that you, and other Americans are better qualified to decide for yoursleves weather or not to carry a weapon.
I guess I just wish it wasn't a (real or perceived) necessary evil anywhere in our world.
Different perspective from our friends to the North. I have nothing against guns, I don’t own any, nor desire too, but I do like to go down to a friend’s place and spend time shooting in the range he has in his back yard (8 acres). I can’t deny it’s fun to do a couple of times a year and can fully understand the appeal of guns for target sports or hunting. I can even see some people wanting a weapon for home invasion. Having said that. I cannot conceive of living somewhere so dangerous I would feel the need to carry, let alone a conceal carry. If I lived in such a dangerous place I felt that was a necessity I’d move me and my family immediately and pay the movers to pick up my stuff, no messing. Luckily I live in a nice safe area called metro Detroit so I feel totally safe and don’t have to worry about weapons.

I live in what I consider a very safe area, but that doesn't mean there aren't bad people or people that might do bad things.
I grew up in a town of about 250 people. The nearest big towns are about 25,000 people, one 30 miles north and one 30 miles south. I'd consider the whole area to be safe.
My best friend growing up went nuts and shot 6 people, killing 5, and then killing himself. I wish someone had been concealing and shot him as soon as he drew his weapon. I don't know what made him do it, but something obviously wasn't right in his brain.
