Multiple sclerosis, diabetes, cancer of the optic nerve, and those are just people I know. I will ignore most health issues until they go away or I get used to them. My eyes I don't berkeley with.

Good. Be sure you let them know about what happened so they can be a bit more thorough in their testing. The doctor will know a lot better than us here what could have caused that and how concerned you should be.
Pinchy, was there ever resolution to this?
Woke up this morning with some weird stuff in my vision. Check the Cleveland clinic first and then this group (because I'm broken). Headed to the hospital as soon as I wake up properly to rule out retinal detachment. Sigh.
Pinchvalve,
As a sufferer or migraines, another possibility is that you had a ocular migraine. I usually get that just before my headache starts. Scary to have a portion of your vision get completely blurred out for a while.
Hopefully your checkup went fine and there was nothing serious.
I get the ocular migraines without the subsequent headaches. Blind spots that occur for up to about thirty minutes. You would think they would be a black spot, but actually they're just blank.
They only happen in the afternoon at work when we're really slammed. My job can be incredibly stressful.
I'm supposed to stop and rest. Yeah, right.
Floaters. No apparent detachment at this time. That's good I suppose.
But my eyes are currently dilated to hell and I can barely see. Everything has a Vaseline haze.

I get those too.
I tell people it's like when you look into a bright light, then look away and all you see is the white light in the middle with some vision surrounding it. I also get blurred vision, sideways vision, like everything is on an angle and sometimes warped vision like everything's bent. I thought I had a tumor or something, but was lucky that there's a doctor close to me that's apparently an expert on the subject, and I was able to see her. She called it migraine aura, and told me I'm really lucky I don't have any pain. Hunger seems to be my trigger, and I can generally just work around them.

I think I may have had one of those a month or so ago. I had a line of sparklies diagonally across my vision, didn't matter which eye I closed, or both. I contemplated finding an emergency room because of the impending stroke, but it went away after 20 minutes or so. Nothing since.
Duke said:Yep, my thoughts exactly. Especially if you have any black spots at all, get to an eye doctor. Retinal detachment is seriously no joke. You'll want to have it treated - or ruled out - ASAP.
A coworker had to spend 6 weeks in bed staring at the ceiling after a partial detachment.
The black spots are harmless per my eye Dr. I have been living with it for 25+ years.
Ocular migraines are something I've had a few times over the past couple of years. Definitely a little scary having a hole in your vision, and I definitely get the headaches, as well. I always get checked out immediately in case it's something else like a detached retina. Stress and long periods of bending over and looking down seem to be what trigger mine. The fist time it happened to me, I had been spreading out topsoil, seeding, and putting down straw on a large section of our lawn the day before until 10PM that night.
