Don't break drug laws
Now that's just crazy talk there.
I think the increase was more for how smily and giggly she was after the $5000 pronouncement.
To my knowledge, this was all within the powers granted to a judge. I am not entirely sure on the "come back" thing, but I suspect that its on the up and up.
And yes, she should have been held in contempt for flipping off a judge. Can't you technically be held in contempt for not standing when they call "All rise"?
By some arguments in this thread, the very concept of contempt of court is defensible on the grounds of the first ammendment. Simply not true.
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Contempt+of+Court said: An act of deliberate disobedience or disregard for the laws, regulations, or decorum of a public authority, such as a court or legislative body. Individuals may be cited for contempt when they disobey an order, fail to comply with a request, tamper with documents, withhold evidence, interrupt proceedings through their actions or words, or otherwise defy a public authority or hold it up to ridicule and disrespect.
"Adios" is not any more disrespectful or informal than "bye bye." The flipping off thing, though? Hot damn she dumb.

Not always..... (but read my whole post before replying)!!! I was 19 or 20. I was attending a particular Post High School Institution.
My brother, myself, and an old acquaintance, who probably has an account here, were "Smoothing Things Out". (with some fine cheeba).. Listening to Dark Side Of the Moon.
We were in the back of my van at a rural park that rarely got traffic of any sort. All of a sudden the Ontario Provincial Police come rolling up.
The OPP never patrol this park ever, they probably had to get directions to find the park.
Anyway back to my point.. OPP pulls up asks us to come outside. We did, officer asks me "Where is the marijuana". I was very polite and respectful. I didn't try to hide it, or lie to him. I said, it is right here.... Showed him where it was and invited him to search the van. He did and found nothing else... Yes Sir, No Sir, hands where he could see them, we even removed our coats....
Fortunately, we smoked damn near all the weed. There were literally a few crumbs left... Ya, the whole van reeked of weed but it was pretty much gone.
It must have been his first day on the job... He charged me with possession of Marijuana. I was honest with him and told him where it was.... He released me immediately, with a court date. At least I was able to hear the end of Darkside of the Moon without having to flip the tape.
I went to court. It was a preliminary hearing.... I talked to the Crown Attorney. He said he would let me off easy if I agreed to Community service. I said no.
No Community service for me, I would rather hear what the judge thinks of this... He said I was stupid because I would end up a criminal record....
It went before the judge (keep in mind this was still a preliminary hearing)..
The charges were read.... After the charges were read, I was given the chance to address the judge directly (against the advice of my public defender)..
I told the judge, "I am absolutely guilty of possessing a small amount of Marijuana". "I would like to profess my guilt now, rather than waste taxpayer dollars on a trial that should be settled here and now"....
I plead guilty....
After finding out the amount of weed I was busted with....
The judge rejected my guilty plea...
"Despite your plea of guilty. I reject it."
"I find you Not Guilty, of the offense. In addition to this. I am sick of my time, and the taxpayers money being wasted with charges like this being brought before me.

Are we really going to disagree about this?!Yeah, he was kind of a dick - but I was raised with the yes sir/no sir attitude in court. She was an idiot - flipping off a judge? Once I was helping my nephew and took him to his court appearance. He comes out all baggy pants and gang banger style from his house - I ask why he doesn't have slacks and a tie on? NOBODY goes to court like that any more, he laughed. Today? He's sitting in jail......
I haven't read the entire thread but I've seen this backfire.
A friend of ours got nailed in CA on a technicality of not having insurance and CA plates after being here for longer than the minimum time, it's something like 2 weeks I believe. The E36 M3ty part was that she had insurance but the insurance company mailed her the cards with only her fathers name on them.
So anyway she goes to court dressed up like you think you're supposed to and is in line behind some E36 M3 bag in sandals, shorts and a raggy t-shirt, who by the way is in there for the same thing, not having registered his car in CA within the minimum time frame. He gets off with a fix it within x number of days and show proof. She walks in, the judge takes one look at her and I E36 M3 you not says "Well you look like you make enough money. You can afford to fight it." The sticks her with the entire 1800 dollar fine.
Personally I'd have kicked down the doors to the bar association and thrown a damn hissy fit. Unfortunately she didn't fight it beyond that because she was leaving the state in a few days to take another job in AZ.
