My new Marlin 60

New to me anyways. I've been on the prowl for awhile now, looking for a good .22 rifle. I let a few 10/22's and Savage's slip through my fingers. But then yesterday, I saw it. A Marlin 60 sitting in the Pawn Shop. It called to me. I called back. $115. I went home and told the wife. She said yes. And today, it became mine.

It came with these scope mounts. Not thrilled with them.

Since I have no scope to mount right now, they had to go. Blocking the irons and what not.

So I went out to the range to test it. Let me get my excuses out now. I haven't been shooting in awhile, I need more practice, new gun, and I was hungry. I think that covers it.

All shot at 50m. Not bad, but obviously room for improvement. Worryingly, while I was shooting two screws started to back off which let the receiver move around a little. I thumb tightened them down, and everything was fine. Will a little loctite fix this?

Loose screws would allow things to move around, particulerly if they were reciever screws. That allows the reciever to move in relation to the stock or the barel to move in relation to the reciever or you get the idea. Every thing is not in the same place shot to shot. You must remove the variables to be consistent.

Tighten the screws and see how consistent it is with a decent scope mounted. You shouldnt need locktite on a .22 if you can tighten the screws properly, That means the slots arent chewed up from a screwdriver camming out in the past. Look up hollow ground screwdrivers and make some.

those scope mounts hook to the dovetail and give you a weaver rail, right? i'll take them off your hands if you don't want them. seriously.

I have a 22 Marlin also, picked up online auction for similar money with a scope, yet to shoot it though, lying on 2' of snow sucks

I'm not sure how I feel about them yet. They appear to be pretty nice, but I can't find a scope I could mount that wouldn't then require a chin weld rather than a cheek weld for shooting. I'm not sure if I want to try something first.

yeah they definitely look like they might require a bit of extra elevation on the cheek piece, but might could be made to work with some low profile rings.

I've got that same gun, too! (AFAIK, it's the most popular .22 ever made).

I changed the wood stock out for a synthetic one (a real Marlin one, not the "tacticool" things). Then I threw a decent-ish scope on it, along with a sling so I could carry it a little easier. It's my favorite gun, and always fun to take in the woods plinking. It isn't quite as accurate as my bolt action .22 set up for competition shooting, but it also doesn't weigh 800 pounds, and I love not having to feed ammunition one-by-one. You should have lots of fun with it!

Oh, and as a side note, mine doesn't seem to like Remington ammunition. It'll eat almost anything else, just not Remington.

edit: I forgot to mention that I camo'd it, too. Something about a black stock on a black gun didn't look right, and I had lots of shades of tan paint lying around. I doubt I'll ever need a camouflaged .22, but I had fun doing it.

Mine ate all the Federal ammo I fed it yesterday. An Federal is the cheapest stuff at Walmart. I'm gonna like this gun.

It's legal for a neat sport called Metallic Silhouette in the "Cowboy" class, I believe it's called. Iron sights required. Tube magazine semi-autos can shoot with the lever actions. You should look into it. Tons of fun. www.steelchickens.com

Third the no remington ammunition. Mine seems to prefer round nose over hollow points, 40 grain preferably. I've also recently started using dry lube and the rifle is flawless.

seems to just depend on the gun and the ammo, my 10/22 didn't like winchester wildcat when it was new. strangely, now with the new tighter chambered barrel it chews through just about anything. ymmv i guess

What are some decent scopes? I've heard BSA and Tasco sights are alright and cheap.

bsa makes a rimfire 3-7x20 scope that comes with 7/8" dovetail rings and that black semi-glossy finish that goes just right with hardwood and blued finish.

Nice little Marlin you have there. I have an old Marlin 80 that is a bolt action and just love the thing. Oh this reminds me I haven't posted updates to my hotrod...

looks like we'll have some pretty good weather this weekend, hopefully i can get out and play with mine some.
