Jalopnik summed it up best

The U.S. government proposed a new mandate today requiring backup cameras on all new vehicles by 2014. It's the latest front in Ray LaHood's war to protect us from ourselves. You know what else works? Paying attention. [AP]
But why pay attention if you can pay for a camera?

How hard is it to become a mexican citizen? I'd say Canadian, but I already hate winter.
Well..when your choice is rabble rouse for backup cameras...or fix Social Security et al. As a politician you're going to go for the easy way out.
"Backup cameras FOR EVERYONE! Woot WOOOT! Yeah me!"
Reminds me of a song "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am...stuck in the middle with you."

why not just mandate that cars have normal beltlines and back windows you can actually see out of.
i read somewhere that the high beltlines in cars is due to them making people feel safer, like theres more car between them and whatever might hit them.
They are going to need cameras for the front of cars/trucks pretty soon:
I am pretty sure a smaller child would have to be 20ft in front of this thing to be able to see them!

I think you just show up, pound out a million kids, don't encourage any of them to speak Spanish, collect a bigger and bigger check for each one you pop out, and if you're unhappy with the amount you're receiving, gather up a few thousand of your buddies and protest at the capital at noon on a Tuesday while all the natives are working. Find a job that requires no education or skill, get paid cash, buy a duallie-quad-cab-turbo-diesel pickup (sans-back-up camera, of course,) and at the end of the year, tell the government you only made $7,000, so you can get your "earned income tax credit" and free health care for life.
Pretty sure that's how it works anyway.

I wonder how head-explody they'd get after somebody re-tuned their car with a Cobb Access port?

"head-explody"
Are you sure that's a word?
sounds like a good way to drive up the cost of a car by a bit - all part of the price of living in a "developed" country. We're paying loads of politicians, all kinds of money for them to make up new laws and rules - they are doing exactly what they are paid to do. South America keeps looking better - serious gearheads in Argentina.
In reply to Appleseed:
Damn. I bow to your animated gif-ness.
I also read they want to make it mandatory to have technology deactivate cell phones while in a car.
While I don't talk on cell phones much while driving, what about passengers?

Soon you will have to preset your radio before driving, because you won't be able to change it while you drive. I mean come on! It's a proven fact, distractions cause accidents. So we just have to remove anything that could be a distraction in any way shape or form!
When people wonder why a new car costs 40 large, you just have to remind them how dangerous they were before backup cameras, air bags, ABS, etc. were made manditory. Why, THINK OF THE CHILDREN. IF WE COULD JUST SAVE ONE LIFE, IT WOULD BE WORTH IT.
So, which Senator is getting a kickback, I mean a contribution, from the company that makes the camera system?
Back in the day, a bunch of dudes were fed up with their overlords impractical, immoral, one sided, greedy and stagnant ways, said "Ive had enough", told those guys to piss off, and tried something new. I think we are all pretty fed up right now too. Wonder what it took to make those Dudes say piss off? Wonder if its something like whats happening now with taxation, Nanny states, and lack of personal responsibility and behaving irresponsibly toward your constituency?
...Im just sayin

Based on recent threads - I expect some or all of you may have been compromised. Perhaps you should send me all of your contact information so we can find...er... assemble offline. mailto:obrien@ministryoftruth.com
Yeah it's getting pretty ridiculous. I can't remember if there was a thread back in September when this story came out but it's along the same lines.

Here's a couple of paragraphs.....
Safety advocates are urging Congress and regulators to force carmakers to install warning systems that would prevent distracted parents from leaving children in cars, preventing heatstroke deaths.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering a petition to include safety belt reminder chimes for all seating positions. In comments she plans to submit this week to NHTSA, Kids and Cars President Janette Fennell says these same chimes that sense if people aren't buckled in should also warn if children are still buckled in cars after they're locked.
Safety groups including the Consumer Federation of America and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety also plan to push for language that requires driver-reminder chimes for kids in cars to be included soon in sweeping highway legislation.
"If you're going to have a reminder system for people to buckle up, why not remind them if they haven't taken the child out of the seat?" asks Jackie Gillan, vice president of the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety.
Of course the reason they need backup cameras now is that some cars have mirrors that drop when you put the car in reverse. I don't need to watch my rear tire when I back up damit. I want a broader field of vision. I'm just saying...really, really irritates me.

Um, why not just pay attention to your kids?
What rear visibility of modern cars might look like:

Sad commentary, but that's exactly what I thought when I saw the report this morning: Who's the maker of these systems, who's backing the bill, and are they a public company? Investment opportunity just knocked on the door.

Well, the original thing I posted was about mandatory backup cameras on all cars....and now, there's this, too.
http://jalopnik.com/5704284/meet-your-new-co+driver-the-insurance-companys-nannycam
America's auto insurers will push for new driver monitoring systems, such as in-car video cameras, as a way to cut costs and crashes. Who needs driverless cars when all drivers could soon get an electronic nanny?
In recent years insurers have started using various systems, including GM's OnStar, to check the miles driven claimed by their customers. But upcoming new technologies go much further; gathering and reporting data about exactly how people drive.
Progressive Insurance already has about 100,000 customers signed up for its Snapshot (formerly known as MyDrive) device. It's a dongle that plugs into a vehicle's diagnostic port, collecting data about stops, speed and driving time for at least 30 days while wirelessly reporting that data back to Progressive. Drivers who meet Progressive's standards can qualify for a 25%t to 30% discount.
