We're planning on a vacation in this area this summer. The main reason is to attend a concert there and visit some friends in Franklin. But we'll have time for a lot of other things as well. Now, we're not really country music fans, although we will take in some things related to that. But what else is there? Any car related things to do in that area? I'm open to anything really. Pour it on!
For car-related things, you'll definitely want to visit the Lane Motor Museum

Lane museum for sure. The national corvette museum and corvette plant are in Bowling Green Kentucky, 45 minutes or so north of Nashville.

Second vote for the Corvette Museum if you've never been. Also near NCM is the Mammoth Cave National Park. BIG caves to tour.

I didn't get to go, but sampled the wares at a bar. It will be on my list the next time through.
Parthenon may be a visit, too. Even if you're not a country music fan, Nashville is a pretty entertaining town.
Whenever my wife and I travel we always visit the local zoo and the botanical gardens. Both are quite nice in Nashville.
All the above. Also, even if you aren't a country music fan, Grand Ol' Opry can be interesting. Especially if you attend a Friday or Saturday night show. If I remember right, the early Friday night show was broadcast live on radio and Saturday night show was broadcast on TV. Kinda neat to see them pause and the announcer do the commercials on the side of the stage.
Jack Daniels still is not far from there. They have tours but no tasting as it is in a dry county.

If you're there on a weekend, there's a nice road course across the interstate from the corvette museum that has something going on every weekend.
Again, it trends northward but if alcoholic beverages are of interest you might want to check this out. All distilleries have tours and tastings and IMHO are a bit better than JD.

So being from Nashville might I offer some suggestions and reinforce those already given.
Go downtown one night and just bar/honky tonk crawl. Country music not your thing? Just stroll on down to the next joint on Broadway, you'll find some really good rockabilly at Layla's on Friday night around 10, Hillbilly Casino starts jamming. Like blues, soul, or funk? Walk on over to Printers Alley and visit the Blues Boogie Bar. Just bring some cash, some places have cover charges, so best to be prepared.
Like Beer? There's a plethora of Breweries in the area. Yazoo has a great tap room over on Division St. Grab a growler of Dos Peros to take with you. Don't want to settle for just one maker? Go to the Flying Saucer in the old Union Station, about 75 beers on tap and 200 total.
Food, oh the food. You would be remiss to come and not eat any of the "real" hot chicken here. Hattie B's like was said earlier is great, I prefer Pepper Fire over on Gallatin Ave. For breakfast/brunch, The Pancake Pantry in Hillsboro Village is a local favorite, just expect a line unless it's tuesday an hour before closing, lol. Since you'll be in Franklin I would suggest going to Loveless Cafe near the Natchez, best biscuits ever, period. Jacks BBQ is definitely going to the be your best bet for Texas Style BBQ, the brisket is great. If you want real southern pulled pork, go to Centerpoint BBQ in Hendersonville. Want to go out for a nice dinner with the missus, there's a great Italian bistro in Belle Meade; Finezza's, small place with a cozy/intimate dining environment.
Like others have said, go see the Lane Motor Museum for sure. But other than that, not a whole lot car oriented stuff in the area. The Franklin Cars and Coffee events can attract some really nice cars though, so if one is happening while you're in town you might want to grab a coffee and see what's out and about.

Natchez is 45mph and is pretty well patrolled unfortunately. But it does have some nice scenery.
Used to live in Nashville. Definitely recommend the Lane Motor Museum and Hattie B's. Also, The Hermitage is worth checking out, pretty cool piece of history, same with the Parthenon. Greening Automotive is in a rough neighborhood but a really cool shop that builds badass cars. Owners are friendly, willing to talk, will take you on a tour of the shop. If you have the time. Music City Indoor Karts is a blast, although a little pricey. Paradise Park in downtown has some killer burgers and sweet potato fires for real cheap. Corvette Museum is only an hour north and a must-see.
