While I have several Jewish friends, this is the first time that one has lost a close relative (father). What do I need to know?

Ask your friend. Different areas may have different traditions.

I've done this for relatives (even though I'm Presbyterian). Mostly you come to the mourner's house and just sit quietly. Usually, low "shiva chairs" are provided.

Make sure to bring Ham sandwiches for the buffet table. Shrimp cocktail if you're loaded. BLT's will do in a pinch.
