This is going to sound silly, but this is how you need to do it in Outlook: You open the Contacts view on the left. You should see all your contacts as little squares. Click between the squares and then press Ctrl-A to select them all. Then right click one and hit "send as business card" and send that email to yourself. Then you should be able to import those VCF files onto anything - for a phone you may have to beam them over bluetooth or load them onto the phone and then open the files one by one. If it's just for backup purposes, just dump the files onto your backup drive.

Keep a positive outlook, and you'll be fine!

A .pst file isn't compatible with anything but Outlook - no good for phones, and a PITA if you try to pull backups far in the future and Outlook has gone the way of the dodo.

Can you sync contacts with Google or FaceBook or something? I seem to remember in my pre-Mac days that .pst were very limiting, but I could sync Exchange with an online service, and that would get my contacts onto my phone and online.

Import/Export options should allow you to export .PST (as you noted) but also to CSV (Comma separated Values) at a minimum.

That at least gives you the list...

Then exporting with CSV file option will allow any spreadsheet (or text file app) to read the data.

You'll need to log in to post.
