When shopping under $3k you have to stike quick. The good ones are gone fast and the bad ones stick around forever.

I hate when people don't have a clue how much cars cost. My friend just told me last night that she's gonna up the price cap to $5k, but she doesn't want whatever vehicle to be older than 2004.

I had to explain to her that if she wants something that new that cheap, she's not going to find it in the Chicago area. I think the newest vehicle I found was an '03, but it was not what she was looking for.

She also told me that her sister likes the Scion xB and the Cube, but I told her they are too new to be that low in price. I happened to find an '06 xB for $4500 with 175k on the odo and she said it was too many miles for a vehicle that new.

I'm about to tell her to do her own research.

2004? 5k? Maybe if she buys a Kia Rio from Detroit.....

I know it's WAY WAY too old and might seem too GRM-focused rather than real-life-focused, but post-'87 E30 318i with the M42 engine? failing that, E30 325i? shouldn't be hard to find one for >$5000, fun, reasonably practical, fairly reliable and parts should be fairly comparable to modern cars, price wise, and they are just plain good looking and driving cars as long as you don't let maintance slip too much. plus, it's a BMW, which probably counts for something in the mind of an 18 year old girl who doesn't know what a bargain they are
