So she has been wanting a bird for awhile now. I don't hate them, just indifferent to birds. Always seemed like noisy things that were in a cage and you could see from a distance, no use.
But $200 made her so berkeleying happy I'd buy her one every month to see that smile, so here's our new addition:

She also joked this could be an "engagement bird" ie - no ring needed. For $200 how could I refuse? Apparently it's a Quaker Parrot, 3 months old. He let me pet him on the counter at the bird farm very quickly, so he's pretty cool already. She bought the cage and toys/feed so no problems.
I was concerned the cats would be an issue. But the pitbull was more interested at first! After she got used to it, the cats started getting too close and the bird would squawk. Would you believe the pitbull turned into momma bird-protector/guardian?? She'd charge the cats if they got too close, then come back to us with her goofy grin like "I did good huh?"
Quakers have a LOT of personality! Our first bird was a quaker. He'll be a super affectionate critter.

A pitbull, some cats, and now a parrot? You need ferrets.

Are they considered that because shiny happy people that shouldn't own them in the first place release them to the wild?

Technically, all parrots are nuisance animals, just that most of them are in captivity. Quakers are highly prolific, and highly adaptive. They thrive in wild flocks in Florida, Texas and Brooklyn, NY, among other places. So some states have just gone ahead and outlawed them rather than deal with the potential of a Quaker apocalypse.
Singapore is currently dealing with a large flock of feral goffin's cockatoos that have caused neighborhood-wide blackouts and hundreds of thousand of dollars of property damage.

What's a few thousand dollars when they're clever and adorable?
Did I mention adorable?

A friend at work came up with the best bird name. Timmy. I could listen to it saying Timmy! all day every day and laugh every single time.

You have to play a sound clip of that as often as possible so he picks it up just like it is in the show.

Bonus points if he can sing the "Lords of the Underworld" along with it.
