I understand the angst over Redskins, but I cannot understand the same reaction to Indians.  How is Indians considered a bad name?  Is Germans a bad name?  Italians?

If they temporarily change their name to the Cleveland Baseball Team, I will buy a jersey.  They’ll probably come up with a permanent name before the season begins, though.

I absolutely bought a washington football team shirt because it just says "football team" on it.

Calling them Indians was kind of a misnomer in the first place. If you asked somebody from the Iroquois nation if they were the same as somebody from Bangladesh, what do you think they'd say?

Well.... you could still call them the Indians, you would just need to change the mascot... and some of the food sold in the stadium...

In Cleveland, the county and the river are Cuyahoga. The origin of the word is mostly that its a bastardized pronunciation of a couple of Indian words/names for the river.

To this day there is some debate over the pronunciation with one way being:

Kie (like pie) ay hoe gah and the other being

Kie uh hog ah

So, considering the need to make up a word to make it trade mark able in the vein of Altima vs Ultima, I wonder if a Cleveland mascot could be The Cuya Hogs. A unique and trademark able name. Sort of a nonsense word followed by a pig-themed mascot.

Tie in the football dog pound and become The Cuya Dogs

This ^^.  Because the dumbasses who discovered indigenous people on [what we called] the American continent were unable to perform basic astronomic navigation and missed their mark by 5000 miles.  They thought they were in India, so they called them Indians.  That's like calling someone from Japan a Spaniard.  I won't even refer to indigenous people as Native Americans.  They weren't native to America, they were here long before we Europeans called it America.

It's hard to come up with a name that doesn't sound like a AA team trying to get fans to the game.

Based on the local animals to NE Ohio, the only one that has any majesty is the Eagle- as I doubt they would want to be called the skunks or raccoons.  Steamers is ok.

Could be called the Generals, since the city was founded by General Moses Cleaveland (yea, someone did drop an a apparently).

You could do worse than skunks or raccoons - how about Cleveland Zebra Mussels? However, you could combine raccoons with Rockers and have the Rockin' Raccoons. OK, that's probably a bit too AA. Eagles have an added bonus of also being the Polish national bird, but Philadelphia's football team already took that. I think Cleveland Rockers is pretty good, but for a serious contribution of my own, I'd suggest Cleveland Sailors.

For Washington, I suggest the Washington Corruption. A name that's not trying to offend anyone's political views - it's meant to offend everyone's political views!

I was going to consider the Washington Welfares.  A bunch of people getting paid by the government to not do their jobs :)

Kinda like the Oilers becoming the Titans.

The Oilers just wanted to be proactive and change their name before the environmental nuts forced their hand. Because they did it pre emptively, they got to choose a somewhat manly name instead of something PC and wimpy like "The Wind" or The Tesla's"

Just thought of a geeky name for Washington to go with my suggestion for Cleveland: the DC Voltage.

Or if you want to go with something a little more subtly snarky than The Corruption, how about the Washington Boars? You get the chance to draw a seriously mean mascot, along with puns about "bores" and pork.

Washington Gerrymanderers.  Doesn't really roll off the tongue, but it won't be long until sports casters give them the nickname of "the Gerrys" like "the Bucs" or "the Rays"

Cleveland Rocks (Rock n Roll hall of fame)  Their mascots could be a Fender Strat and a big Zildjian cymbal
