I think its a great credit to the band that they didn't really throw him to the wind and that he had accumlated a good bit of wealth.

I heard an interview with David Gilmour where he described seeing Syd Barrett again after several years, he nearly started crying. It was an unannounced visit at a recording session, Gilmour said he didn't recognize him at first. That visit was the inspiration for 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'.
