In an effort to save money, the USPS whipped out a little used rule that eliminates door to door services. This area has built up a lot due to new Nana Tech factories.
In the last two months, I've sent out three checks, never to be received. Last week I sent PoopShovel something "Priority Mail", it hasn't arrive yet, 10 days later.
Hang in there Poop.

Um, USPS hasn't eliminated door to door. Refusing locations with long driveways and private roads isn't new, and isn't obscure or unused. There's a reason many farms have a box up by a main road, and many folk have a po box.
Not defending lost payments and packages. Just the connection of dots being made.
I still love USPS if that counts for anything. They are the savior of a Canadian car guys' existence.
This guy has too much mail

Yup - USPS is the only ones that don't ream us Canuckers out.
Nothing like paying more in brokerage than the item is worth. Thanks Fed-Ex, UPS, DHL. etc.
Nana Tech? So surveillance and safety stuff?

If you read the article they want the development to have a central mailbox instead of going door to door. Thats reasonable to me.
That's not reasonable to me.

Tons of developments have central mailboxes. I think it depends on whether the roads are public or private. I assume there are other factors. Whether or not it's reasonable to you it's the way things have been done for longer than I've been alive, I have no idea why it would suddenly be a problem now.
USPS is the bane of my existence. A month or so ago i bought some parts off a buddy of mine in California. 5 weeks later, i still hadn't received them. He claimed he shipped them. 2 weeks later, still no parts, and i'm starting to doubt him.
I finally tell him "look man, i want my money, or my parts, and i don't care which at this point." He looks into it, can't find any info, or his receipt. I doubt him further.
1 more week, i get the box delivered finally.
USPS's own stickers/paperwork on the box show an acceptance date 8 weeks ago. I apologize profusely to my buddy.
And right now, we're trying to track a lost package from Pierce Motorsports for an updated hub/trailing arm setup for the Escort. Also USPS. Was supposed to be delivered probably 2 months ago now. USPS claims the package was never dropped off to them (we do have a tracking number, though). But somehow... they managed to deliver the other 3 packages that were dropped off at the same time.
Nightmare. berkeley USPS. The ONLY time i will ship anything USPS is if i'm shipping something cheap enough that it doesn't make sense to pay any more than a small flat rate box in shipping. I've refused to sell people on other forums parts after they've bitched about Fedex Ground w/ insurance and tracking shipping quotes i've given them.

It seems like an easy solution to me. Someone say " put it here"
I guess the problem is there is no space. Normally an area is set aside for those.
HAHA! Just sent you an email, Dan. They put it in the "big box" (shared mailbox with 20 or so slots, and two "big boxes" in the bottom.) She dropped the damned thing off on Monday, but didn't put the key in my box.
Shoot me your address so I can mail you some $$$. Your handwriting is almost as bad as mine.
I am still waiting on a package from a month ago.
The tracking info still says it will be delivered 5/2/2013.
Awesome.

That's what a Canadian who doesn't want to do any work says You can avoid all the brokerage and dispersment and COD fees if you make the correct arrangements ahead of time. Time and money are the same thing, you spend one or the other.
Meanwhile, vendors have problems with USPS because customers don't understand what "can't be tracked" and "no, we don't know where it is or when it will be delivered" means.

We must have a very good post office up here, although I did go through a period of lost payments awhile back......
I have had very good luck with USPS, but they did one time lose a $4,500 cashier's check that was sent to me via express mail. That was exciting. I was home but the mailman didn't bother knocking, he just put a note on the mailbox that he attempted delivery. I went to the post office and no sign of it. I went to the mail sorting station and no sign of it. Called the supervisor, no sign of it. The guy buying the equipment from me was amazingly tolerant and was able to get the bank to issue a replacement by putting up a bond.

I'm a government employee, what is this "work" you speak of?
As for putting in the "legwork", I've looked into it. Time and again, there appears to be no formal process that will work properly, and USPS doesn't charge duty PERIOD (IIRC), whereas you still can end up paying a substantial amount doing it yourself.
USPS and the others don't decide what duty is assessed. That depends on the parts you're ordering - used vs new, NAFTA vs not. Heck, it's Canada Post that you're talking about, USPS just throws it over the wall at the border. And yes, they can be a little more lax about collecting duty/GST/PST/HST than the private companies at times.
If you want to avoid many of the UPS fees, then there are a couple of easy things you can do. Set up pre-payment, this avoids the disbursment and COD fees and also makes it easier to get your parts. Ship via a faster method than Ground, as that will cover the document charges.
From http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.html
"To avoid bond fees, call 1-800-PICK-UPS and ask about our Prepayment or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) plans."
I grew up a military brat... over seas ALL of our mail went to the post office on base so we all had a PO box... our apts here have a central mail box...
I know the entire country of Panama only uses PO boxes...
around here I see the mailman parked on the side of the road walking to drop things in the letter boxes of the house... to me this just seems like a silly waste of time... a central neighborhood post box is quick and efficent...
but no one ever said anything about efficiency of a government run "company"
Probably because people prefer mail at their doorstep to walking (let's get serious, driving) 1/4 mile to check the mail.
Efficiency and cuts are always great when distributed to others.
