Are they going to waste tax payer money to access phone records to prove texting for a routine traffic stop?

What about seatbelt laws? Those are certainly enforced, and it's a lot more difficult to see the angle of a shoulder belt than if someone is holding up a phone. Of course, the seatbelt is a much less expensive offense.

I have heard about anti-texting laws increasing accidents though. You still end up with morons texting, except they have to hide their phone in their lap and take their eyes so off the road that they can't even see what's going on in peripheral vision.

The law does not penalize drivers using an electronic device or a GPS that is fixed to a surface inside the vehicle.
So it is automatically safer if I have the phone mounted to my steering wheel??? Mount the laptop to my dashboard and I'm good to go, surf to my hearts content because it's not handheld?

this is how the cops can say that its OK for them to drive around typing license plates into a laptop mounted to the center console. i'm sure that they'll say the cop has better training or something and still try to get their $150 out of you though...

I wonder if I can make a citizens arrest when I see a cop typing on the laptop they have mounted on the dash... or yapping into a phone. That would rock... except I'd be prosecuted for filming them to make my case... what with that being banned too. DOH!

I see cops regularly around here playing solitaire on the highway.

Or watching Family Guy on the highway. (Really. I've seen this twice now.)

Most factory GPS units will not let you operate them while in motion.. not even from the passenger seat. This is something I have found annoying, as the chrylser vans we rent for work sometimes need the GPS updated while on the road.. but you have to pull over and stop so the PASSENGER can access it
