Lenovo H520 desktop computer, running Windows 8.1. If you haven't put an SD card in it for a few weeks, it takes upwards of half an hour for it to finally realize there is an SD card in the port. Once in realizes the card is there, and reads it, you can swap cards in an out, and it quickly sees and reads them. Until you don't do it for a while, then you get to repeat the problem.

It also does this when the card is inserted into the Epson Artisan 835 printer. The printer immediately sees the card, but not the PC. Though once the PC finally does see it, it sees it and any replacement card instantly.

Darned if I can figure out why it seems like the SD card port goes to sleep when not used for a while. Same with the printer, though the printer itself sees the card just fine. I've researched the problem as well, and can't find a similar problem or a fix.

I've gone through the drivers, no problems and no updates. I'm just not finding a problem to fix.

Any ideas?

That's a hard one...try uninstalling the SD card slot driver package and see if the card reader still works. It may fall back to a generic USB mass storage driver that works better.

Is the SD slot right in the computer itself, or is it a separate adapter that plugs into a USB port on the computer? I have the second kind, and I usually have to unplug it from the computer and plug it back in before the computer will recognize the SD card.

It's in the computer itself. The other is in the printer itself. I've got a USB external, type I might bring and try when it's acting up again, just to see.

It baffles me, it's like it's somehow asleep, and won't wake up. But once it's awake, it's fine and quick.

Huh, that might actually work. Certainly nothing to lose by trying it!
