I can get a Embody locally for 30% off new but that is still $800!!!

I have a somewhat similar chair I got at office Depot a number of years ago (no arm adjustment). I haven't really liked that large cushy style. Doesn't offer the kind of support I would like.
See if the state has a used Eames office chair anywhere in the system. They are expensive but they are insanely comfortable and they are everywhere. They are the office chair that you see in every TV show.
Five leg chairs are usually authentic, four legs are repros.
Also, many police dispatchers get Recaro office chairs. We have a few ratty old ones at the firehouse.
Aeron chair is my suggestion. Don't buy new -- search CL and get one for $300 ~ $400. There is most likely someone selling one that was gently used at home or in an office setting, or someone locally rebuilds/refurbs them. I got mine locally from a guy that refurbs and then adds a 1 yr warranty for about $400. Yeah it is expensive, but it can be fixed with parts readily available online, it is sturdy (mine hasn't given me any problems for the 6 years I've had it) and it is comfortable to sit in for hours on end.

This is pretty much my current chair. I have to say I am shocked at the cost and would have expected something that is a bit better equipped for that much.
At some point, I will break down and pay an insane price for a used Herman Miller Eames Group Aluminum lounge chair and ottoman. I have wanted one since 1985.
The problem is that I work for the Senate and only get to choose from the senate furniture pool. Pretty limited. The Hon posted above was the best of the options available. For the state I got it in, I would imagine it is pretty old because it is pretty damn dirty.
In reply to orphancars:
I rarely buy anything new. I would on the IKEA chair because they are impossible to find used (closest IKEA is 6 hours away). I have looked that the Aeron but am a little concerned with the "waterfall" edge. I am not sure I could stand that on my legs all day and have read others that have had issues with it.

I've seen tons of good used Herman Miller chairs for sale at office furniture supply stores. I have a couple Ergon chairs at home I bought that way. The Aerons are probably even better - I'm sitting in one here at my office right now.
I had a Herman Miller Aeron for 3 years at my last office. Loved it.
I now have one missing the back in my garage. Going to grab a new back off Ebay.
I'm sitting in an Aeron as I type this, and if I end up working from home more again, I'll replace the Ikea mesh back chair I've got in my home office with an Aeron. Been using them off and on for over a decade and for me they're still one of the best office chairs.
Herman Miller knew how to take a sit.

I have to sit all day with a bad back, we have some nice high end stuff at work, couldn't tell ya what it is. For home I rolled the dice on this and its actually pretty decent for a cheap chair.

Poke around bizchair a bit, I've bought a few chairs from them now and not disappointed with anything so far.
Why are these so expensive? The chairs in the first post look like $100...I don't understand
Hi Melanie, but what is the best canoe?
Zombie thread, canoe deleted.
I know it's a zombie, but since we're on the topic, I saw these at the SEMA show a few weeks ago and now I have to have one for my home office. They were awesome!!!
Had no idea that chairs got that expensive but I suppose it makes sense
