The Beach Boys did a good job with "California Dreamin'" as an 'original' track on one of their greatest hits compilations, thinking somewhere around 1988. Pretty faithful to the Mamas & the Papas but that's not a bad thing.
And it might be blasphemy but White Lion kicked much ass doing "Radar Love" in the height of the hair metal era. I still crank that up to 11 when it shows up on my MP3 player.
I remember being really disappointed by the Beach Boys' version of that song.
As for White Lion--I leave that track on when it comes on "Hair Nation" on Sirius (yes, I flip by that every once in awhile)

I think "Hurt" is just a piece of crap song, whether it's Cash or Reznor singing it.
Cash, by the way, does a kick-ass uptempo version of the Stones' "No Expectations"
Einsturzende Neubauten's "Sand" > Nancy Sinatra's original.
I Can See Clearly Now by Screeching Weasel > Johnny Nash
Ballroom Blitz by Crucial Taunt > The Sweet...jk ...or am I?
THIS is gonna hurt.

pretty much everything by the commitments > originals
Also, Im not sure if its necessarily better, but equally enjoyable is Apocalyptica vs Metallica

I've posted this on the board before, but
Flaming Lips' version of "Borderline" DESTROYS the Madonna version.
The FL version isn't on youtube AFIAK, but easily found on google (I'm too lazy to do get the link at the moment)

How about Bowling for Soup's cover of I ran (so far away)?

I have another one: R.E.M.'s version of Toys in the Attic > Aerosmith's.
Live R.E.M. from back when Stipe had hair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We6t3u3b2Nc
Oh yeah, one more: Fishbone > Sublime

The meat purveyors slowed down and sorrowful cover of "Burnin' Love" dominates the elvis version

Tough call, that one.
Another that always amuses me, is Ben Folds covering Dr.Dre's 'Bitches ain't sh*t'.

That's pretty good. Here's the Yellowcard one for comparison:

Newfound Glory has a few funny ones.
Newfound Glory - Kiss me
Newfound Glory - Iris (This one is especially good)
Yeah, i'm not done. Gonna mess up some Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath now.
Coalesce - Immigrant Song
Coalesce - Supernaut
Dillinger Escape Plan - Rebel Yell
Coalesce actually has an album of covers called "There Is Nothing New Under The Sun." It also has "Whole Lotta Love" and "Black Dog" on it, and both are epic.

Imma might catch some flak on this one..........And I do like the Beatles and John Lennon
-however-
"Imagine" by A Perfect Circle > teh original....
--and--
"Possession" by Evans Blue > Sarah McLachlan
And for funsies,
"Jump" by Aztec Camera > Van Halen
Even if you hate jazz, you owe it to yourself to check out The Bad Plus. Dig the end where the key goes from minor to major. berkeleying hilarious: The Bad Plus - Iron Man
Also, better than the Iron Man cover: The Bad Plus - "Flim" by Aphex Twin
Cardigans: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
More jazz insanity. This E36 M3 made me cry the first thousand times I heard it: Charlie Hunter Trio - Come as You Are ...some of the most soulful guitar playing I've ever heard - and he's playing the bass part at the same time.
Iggy, those berkeleying veganstraightedgehardcore"You'll die in the FIRESTOOOOOORM" fags from earth crisis are really just doing a fudgetunnel cover: Sunshine of Your Love</a
