Offset stripes go on the driver's side, you boneheads.
wrong side or right side, i always liked that particular "special" edition Soul.
Also pretty sure those are just vinyl stripes, not paint.

Legend has it that it was used to help safety crews identify which side the driver was on.

I always thought it was to assist in getting the car aligned with the track after spinning out.

Correct. In the early days of sportscar racing, when the driver was likely to be on either side, this was used so safety workers could come up to a wreck of any nationality, in any orientation, and quickly know where the driver should be.
I'd also heard they made it a bit easier to judge small motions of the car, so putting them right in front of the driver made the stripe more visible.

I never knew this.
All I know is, they remind me of the Honda scene around 1995. Tons of offset stripes back then (although not on my car)

This. For better or for worse, they were forever ruined for me.
Also, Brad, prototype racers don't count.

I would have to agree.
That said, my next car will be getting fender stripes.

Gonna have fender stripes, gotta have the best ones.

I doubt I will get something worthy of the BRE colors. Judging by the CMOG banner thats at the Glen.
Both of our MINI's have driver's edge stripes. Partly because they are different than the common MINI stripes... and partly because they're easier to install, since you don't have to worry about them being centered.
I read that the stripes were added in front of the driver to reduce glare from the factory paint. Seeing Kia Souls with the stripe on the wrong side makes me laugh.
There is a white mini clubman with a red offset stripe up top and red stripes down the door sills that gives me the warm fuzzy's.
