I've got four cars on the road right now, but hear the whole story....

2001 Ford Ranger; I've been driving it back and forth to work (26 miles one way) because it's 4 cyl. 5 spd. and kinda cheap to run. My wife and I work at the same site so we run one car at a time. She recently beaked it into a guard rail lighting off the airbags which took out the windshield. I figure ~$2,000 to get it fixed, no collision insurance. Add $2k to its value and it looks like I have to keep it a while. Besides, a small truck is nice to have.

1974 Porsche 914; Nice car, sometimes we commute with it in nice weather, never in the rain though. It hibernates in the winter which is right around the corner.

1986 Suzuki Samurai; my new hobby. Trish never really bonded with the whole Auto-X track day thing. After a Jeep Tour in Sedona, Az. where she was totally at ease climbing off camber rocks and gullies because "you're going slow", I sold off the Auto-X stuff and bought the Sammy. I joined a local Jeep club to learn, but with a short wheelbase and 32" tires it's a real handful at highway speeds. I'm keeping it but not commuting or going far with it. Events far away I would tow it.

1994 Toyota 4-Runner; owned it for 10 years and put 120,000 miles on it. It's japanese rusty. I've replaced a mile of fuel lines and last night replaced a steering stabilizer; front end shimmied. I like driving it, you're a little higher than traffic, it has 4WD, fold down rear seats, electric everything and cruise control. It's a 3.0 litre 5 speed stick. Because we have other "toy" cars, two "regular" vehicles are nice when we go in different directions like on weekends or whe has to go on travel for work.

Because we use the Ranger to commute, the 4-Runner just sits. In NY there is an annual safety inspection required; after crashing the Ranger we started driving the 4-Runner again and got stopped because the inspection was overdue by seven months. Oops. Anywho, I'm thinking of replacing the 4-Runner with something smaller, NOT a MIata unless they offer a hatch wagon. That would be cool!

I pushed a Renault R5 LeCar up and down the highway for five years so small cars don't scare me, a Suzuki SX4 (?) or whatever it's called, a Mazda 3 ot Toyota Matrix, that kind of car would be fine.

The Toyota was great for moving the kid around the country, it gobbled up tons of stuff and even had to haul the BatVan and trailer at the $2004 Challenge when the tow vehicle puked, it's been good to us. The kid is settled in one spot, I'm not hauling anything any longer and I have an off-road vehicle that can handle the snowy days when we used to take the 4-Runner. If they were lighter, more effecient and safer I wouldn't hesitate in buying a restored '63 Falcon or '62 Nova.

My only requirements are 4 cylinder, stick. Cruise would be nice. I didn't put any budget constraints on this because "If we need it bad enough the money is somewhere".

Thanks for your thoughts, Dan

1st gen Neon sedan. The nicest one you can find, because I guarantee you'll be able to afford it.

Sounds like you need the UJSC. That stands for Universal Japanese Small Car.

I'd find something that you like and install aftermarket cruise if it doesn't have it. A friend installed an aftermarket cruise control kit on his motorcycle, designed for a car no less, and it works flawlessly. If those are the only options you're looking for you may be in luck as those cars won't be desired by the masses who want AC and power widgets on every door.

Now, Mazda3's. I own a Mazdaspeed3. Love it. Great car for me right now. I'm on the low mileage end of it as it only has 21k miles so I can't speak to it's reliability over 100k. I have started to see Mazda3 sedans and such going pretty cheaply in Craig's List and auctions. A manual trans may be harder to find than an auto but they're based on a volvo chassis so very safe. Get a hatch and you'd be golden it sounds.

4runner AKA Hilux pickup? I'd keep that for a pickup instead of the Ranger!

Thanks, I should have stated that a hatch or wagon is a screen-out. You can throw lunches, books, gym bags etc. in the back seat but with a wagon it's easier with luggage if we go away for the weekend or to NYC to see Ian.

One of my Co-workers has a SX4 that he commutes from Saugerties to Manhattan in. He's had it for about a year and a half and is almost out of the 100,000mile warrenty but has had no problems and says even with the awd the mileage is good and it's good in the snow. He bought it from a dealer that does free oil changes for life, which they are probably regreting since he does them almost monthly

Dan, it is really tough without a budget.

High end: E46 Touring (5speeds are rare, but they are out there if you look)

Low end: VW Fox wagon (good looking, dirt cheap, great mpg, pretty darn reliable)

In between - upper end: MINI (with a bonus that you could autoX it in stock class)

In between - lower end: 318ti (E36 goodness with a hatch)

EDIT - scratch the e46, forgot about the 4cyl requirement!

Protege 5 Wagon would be right up your alley if you can find one in whatever your budget is. My vote is going to be for an Escort Gt or a wagon. I might be a little biased since I own one but they are good little cars. If you do get a 91-96 Escort though, do yourself a favor and rip out the passive belts and put in regular manual seatbelts. Makes a word of difference. Great gas mileage and you can dig into the Protege/Zx2/Escort parts bin for parts to make these handle a little better.

I could be wrong, but I think the s54 M Coupe was only available with the 3.2L engine.

I've been emailing a girl with a 1998 Excort hatch, 4 door, 5 speed. Low miles, new tires and wind up windows.

Asking $2k.

There was no Escort hatch in the US in 1998. Maybe a wagon?

The Protege5s are neat little wagons. I have liked them since they came out.

They did make a MAZDASPEED version of the regular protege but not the Protege5 (wagon).

I think all MAZDASPEED bits just bolt up...

I didn't think so either. Maybe they are calling the wagon a hatch. Better check it out.

My wife and I really like our Rav-4...its an 05 so its a little smaller than the new one. Front wheel drive - gets close to 30 mpg on a trip!

That would be a 98 Escort Wagon. Sounds like a winner.
