The son (killer) 23 yrs old, lived about 6 miles from me, basically down the same road from me (son is mentally troubled and previous trouble with the law.)
Son visits parent's home which is about one mile from one of my best friends (my friend does not know the family, neither do I.)
Son kills father, step mother, step brother.
Other step brother, 16 yrs old remains alive. He saw the killer that morning at the home, briefly, but it is unclear if the family was dead yet.
16 yr old returns home around 1:00 in the afternoon, finds blood, calls his Aunt (his mother's sister.)
She dials 911 while driving to the house and remains on the phone while entering the house - finding the body.
Local paper posts up entire 911 call - a chilling 8 minutes long.

Killer is in custody.

All this happens in a rural farm community in a county that has only had one murder in the past 8 yrs.

That is going to be be one screwed up 16 yr old.
To heck with the killer, he will likely just remain in a mental institution for life.

Very sad news. Can happen anywhere. Deaths/year have no bearing on when someone goes bezerk. I sincerely hope th3 16-year-old really gets the help he'll need, and has people/family who can help him. He's still young enough to catch potential problems, as long as his care-givers/relatives/whatever DEAL with his problems and don't say, "he'll grow out of it." He'll need one ot two people he can really open up to about all aspects about this, who he can trust, and will not be judgemental about what he says. He's just got to get it out. I hope he doesn't "fall through the cracks."

Is there any good reason to make 911 recordings public?

That seems WAY too ghoulish to listen to. I'll pass.

Same. I don't need any more fodder for bad dreams.

Like there is not enough odd going on here already, then this...
About 12 hours after the killings, the sister of the victim (the father's sister) is found dead in her garage, burned beyond recognition.

There was a murder next door to me last year. In Montana. In a town of less than 2,000. I'm jaded.
