Here I am, a Wisconsonite, about to embark on the journey to the east coast. I'll be heading off to graduate school at UMass Boston for historical archaeology. I can understand the yooper dialect, but not bostonian. Anyone around Boston have any hints for a newcommer to the area? Good places to eat or whatever? any GRM groups around there? I see the renegade miata club is close by and they take all Mazda owners, so I'll probobly look into that.

As for the accent...I always add "ah"..as in "cah", "Bah-ston", "lob-stah", "nor-east-ah"...etc...

You'll get used to it pretty quickly. When I lived up there it only took a couple of months before I was following most conversations.
I got the impression some of the locals thought I was "Retaahded" because I spoke a lot slower than they did.

I am a western Mass. native who commuted to North Adams State College, and it was chock full of Eastern Mass. students who wanted to go to a state school as far away from their parents as possible. Their accents started getting real annoying after about 30 seconds, I couldn't imagine being around them all the time, or (gasp) having one myself.

Tawm. Bawb. Come awn, retahd. A million bratty kids named "Connor".
I dunno--you just get used to it.
You'll get used to it. It didn't take long for me to catch on to the Western NY accent and I came from Northwestern Ontario.
When I talk to a fellow Ontarian, I hear all the oots and aboots now.
I am south of Boston, and we have an even different dialect. The closer to RI you get the more it changes. I feel my accent isn't too bad,but whenever I speak with someone that is from the mid-west or west coast they can instantly tell I am a New Englander,so maybe I am wrong about accent. It is funny, but some that are really good at picking up accents can pick out what suburb of the city someone is from as they are different.
Just plan on dropping your R's,ordering your coffee "regular" which even I don't understand(I don't drink coffee), having people drive like total idiots, and even worse when it snows. MA is a funny state as it really is like three states all in one. The Cape is where everyone goes during the summer, and they bridges suck ass. Boston, and the 'burbs are another part of the state which seems to run the entire state even though most people in the rest of the state don't agree with them all the time. Western MA is the other part of the state that feels like you are in the midwest/mountains at times, and is way different than the other two parts of the state. All these areas have their own unique dialect, but they are all very similar.
Mix in the border portions of the state where it meets RI,CT,NH,VT,and you have a really strange mix of "languages".
Motorsports isn't that strong around here, but it is present. The car culture is limited to the warm "month" of the year is strong, especially if you head out to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline which is really close to where you will be at UMass.
Welcome to Taxachusetts, and if you ever get down to the South Shore look me up. I do have quite a collection of Mazda's,and you are welcome to come down, and hang out. we have cranberries here in my town as well which I am sure you are familiar with being a WI native. Renegade Miata is a great group, and their Auto-X's are the best I have been to ever aside from maybe not getting enough runs at times. They are well organized, and fun, challenging courses.
Wicked Pissah!!!!
Go Bruins!!!
Oh wait,they choked.
Sorry,
Chris

I'm a non-coffee-drinking Rhode Islander who has worked in MA for 15 years (lived there for 8).
Go even further--coffee "medium regular"--which means cream,(medium-dark) and sugar. "Light regular" means heavier on the cream.
I live 30 miles north of Boston, drive in SCCA Solo events, and own a pair of Mazdas. If you're more into track events, COM Sports Car Club does a lot of track day events at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Hopefully I'll see you around sometime!
I try not to drop my "r"s when I speak, but anyone from another part of the country can tell I'm from New England.
Oh, and don't pahk ya cah in Hahvad Yahd. You'll get towed.

Are you sure you live here? If you are into autocross, Devens is probably the busiest autocross site in the country. There are about a dozen clubs that run there, and generally every weekend day from April through October, there will be an event of some sort going. NHMS is not that far away, and plenty of road racing/hpde/autocross happen there all summer. NER SCCA also has an active rallycross program, and there are several clubs that run hillclimb events in the mountains of NH and VT. Lime Rock is also a relatively short drive away. The season doesn't end in the winter either, between ice racing and winter rallyx events. I would argue that, outside of Socal and maybe Florida, this is probably the most active region in the country for Motorsports. There's certainly WAY more available to me here than I will ever have the time/money for.
What I mean is that it isn't as busy a motorsports area as you get down south or out west where the weather is better for more of the year. I understand what you are saying though. Maybe it is just because I am so far south that heading to Devens is a haul. I loved it when we had Auto-X at Otis AFB here on the cape. I take back what I said this is a great motorsports area. I just wish it was better in the area where I live.
I relocated from Philly about 2.5 years ago and basically they seem to appreciate you more if you just tell them to piss off and you're not going to follow the Bruins because you like your home teams more. LOL The bigger dick I am the more they like me. Maybe I'm a m___hole by heart... ;)
Lemme know when you get out here, we'll grab some beers! I work right in Dorchester and live on the South Shore.
BTW, Welcome! You'll have a wicked pisser time.
i'm so sorry to hear the unfortunate location where you will be living. don't let them rub off on you.
Thanks for all the info! There is quite a bit of motorsport in that area! I don't know how trigger happy Mazda is when it comes to voiding new car warranties so I might have to hold off doing anything with my rx8, but i'm sure there are cheap miatas or old rx7s in the area.
And thanks for the hang out offers! I'll definitly need to find car people in the area. My girlfriend and her mother will be living in the Boston area, but other than them and this other person I know who seems to dislike men, I'll be alone and looking for people who don't think 'LSD' is a drug. well, not only a drug.
i'm from canada. they think i'm slow, eh.

Wait until someone tells you that something is "Wicked wierd."
You'll wonder for weeks WTF they just said to you.
Any English-based dialect that you can immediately recognize as English is absolutely no challenge for me now...well apart from British slang words, but I know what the words are, just not what they mean. Sometimes I think they just make them up as they go along.
Why not keep your Appleton accent and blend in?
"Yah hey der - da foundries and paper mills busy?"
Oh sorry, I am just adding to the "We Wisconsinites hate Illinois people" stereotype.
Hey ya wanna zip down to tha packy and get some beah?
