It looks like I'm getting sent to Omaha for two weeks for work. I've never been, and besides a plan to walk over to Iowa to tick that state off of the list of places visited, too, I have no plans.
Is there anything worth doing there? I'll be around the Midtown Crossing area with no car. Yeah, no car, though I may wind up renting one myself for the weekend.
Weekend rentals.
With the major car rental companies, anything picked up after noon Friday and returned before noon on Monday is considered "weekend rates" which are cheaper than weekday.
Try to rent from a neighborhood location rather than an airport so as to avoid "tourist taxes" which can be as much as $15 per day.
I would try to pick up at 9am Sat and return before 9am Mon. This would be considered 2 days and you can likely get a rate of $17 per day.

The Strategic Air Command Museum.
Isn't that the beef capitol? Might be a good place for a steak...
College World Series
If that's not going on I think meth is the only thing left to do out there.
The zoo in Omaha is pretty awesome. It was one of the best in the country at one point.
If you get bored over the weekend and need to turn a wrench I am 3-4 hrs north and could keep you busy and feed you.
We stay in Council Bluffs frequently when we ride to Sturgis. There is Mid America race track just south of there. No one in their right mind would willing go to Nebraska.

Where are you from? Just Curious, as i'm also 3-4 hours north of Omaha.
I'm in Castlewood, between Watertown and Brookings. There's another guy around here too that I haven't met in person yet. You guys should swing by and help me turn something into a challenge car.
I go where the work takes me, and it is just for two weeks.
there is nothing to do - maybe a Bass Pro shop.

When are you going? If this winter, I have no suggestions. If in the summer, the Niobrara River is good excuse for a days drive and for a tube float adventure.
Peyton Manning seemed to have an affinity for the place. That's all I got.
Non-vol'd Omaha resident here. It's not as bad as most people think, to be fair.
I'll update this when I'm not on my phone.
The funny thing is there use to be a ton of cool car stuff there in the early 90s. Right across from crossroads malls there was Stereo West. We use to build some crazy DB drag cars there in the day. The 5.0 movement was really strong with Kenny Brown and Paul Brown. It's always been a bit vanilla and that's why I left and never came back even through the family still lives there.
The Zoo is pretty cool. There was some cool clubs and music joints up in the Benson area which is a quick Uber from there. Winter time is tough because it can be all over the place weather wise.

I didn't know there was such a thing. This gets my vote.
If it's early spring, March is best, there's tornado hunting.

Keep meaning to get back to Brookings. Graduated from SDSU IN 88 and I hear the place has changed a lot.
We have several really good microbreweries in the area if that is your thing. The Zoo and SAC museum are perennial favourites. The Bass Pro is in Iowa. There is a Cabela's in west Omaha. Check and see if there are any events going on at the Century Link Center, Many concerts and sporting events. There are also two crappy casino's across the border in Iowa.
there is a race track about 30 minutes south of Omaha in Pacific Junction, IA. It use to me Mid-America Motorplex but it looks like now it's called Raceway Park of the Midlands. I have never been but we use to always pass it when driving from KC to Omaha to see family when i was a kid and it seemed like they regularly had events going on. They also have a drag strip as well.
But i also agree that the zoo and the SAC museum are both good sights to see.
Also a good place to eat is just east of Omaha in Council Bluffs, IA. Hot rod themed restaurant called Quaker Steak & Lube.
We got to sit at the table under this car which was pretty cool
If your car gets stolen in Omaha, it'll wind up in Counciltucky. Don't go to Counciltucky.
I was out there about a year and a half ago expecting a total snooze-fest. I was also without car. I prefer to be without car on most of my vacations (was downtown Raleigh this weekend without car as well).
The area you are staying is nice. Also walk over to "old market" area. A lot of the food is incredibly good. A couple of good parks in that area as well. Some really cool art shops too.
Not a place that will keep you busy with things to do for weeks at a time, but for a weekend I was totally surprised. Surprised in a "I could live here" kinda way.
