Shhhh. I watch a good bit of futbol (mens) and am sortof becoming a fan in my old age thanks to a son who plays and a few friends who are bent on spreading the gospel. Still, there is nothing fun in defending it. It IS boring as hell if you don't know what is going on or are not in a room full of old players who can explain after suddenly screaming and clawing at their eyes over an event that, to the unintiated, just looks like a small man in shorts kicking a ball.

I was watching the college softball world series, there was some good games and crazy good athletes.

Agree. On Saturday I watched a game between teams of 4 - 5 year olds - it was hilarious! Coaching consisted of trying to get the kids to run toward the correct goal. There was lots of tripping, but it was mostly tripping over the grass, the ball and their own feet.
After that, the women's world cup looked pretty tame, but it was good football nonetheless. Way more fun to watch than baseball. (ducks...)

If you think soccer is indecipherable, try explaining the sport of rugby. If you don't take the time to learn the rules and the strategies, all sports become rather lame and boring.
I agree with alfadriver... if it's not your thing, that's cool.
But I'm a fan of the game and this is the goddamn World Cup. Even if its women, I'm watching it.
I will definitely be watching at 7:30 EDT tonight when the US team plays.
I'd rather watch women's soccer than NBA basketball. But I'd rather catch up on some racing that I missed from this year on YouTube than anything. I'm currently catching up on Indycar and WTCC races.

Mia Hamm was pretty berkeleying hot. I also dated a female soccer player for a bit, let's just say all that running was not bad for her. AT ALL. I may not watch it, but I support it.

I love soccer. I have played it for 21 years of my life but club soccer is so much better then World Cups. Personally I wish FIFA would just go die in a fire and let the clubs play.

Rather have 5 seconds of excitement verses hours of boredom.

i tuned in to Fox to watch the NASCAR race, and there were a bunch of people chasing a white ball around a field... i didn't leave it on that channel long enough to see if it was men or women before checking to see if the race was on Fox Sports 1, which it was..
does soccer really generate ratings that are good enough to push NASCAR to a cable channel that is one level above basic cable? or is this a part of some push to try to make people care about soccer? or are they just hoping that the people that don't have cable or a satellite provider will say "berkeley it, i'm watching something on tv instead of mowing the lawn" and just watch the soccer game?

It's the world cup. Happens every 4 years. A fairly big show.

I don't know about the women's world cup but many of the men's world cup matches drew higher numbers then many of the NASCAR races.

I'm with you on this one. Don't watch soccer, don't care for the sport--hated playing it, and I find that watching it is pretty boring as well. But at least the game is moving the entire time.
I can't stand watching football. Maybe if they sped the thing up somehow, but in an hour game there is what... 13 minutes of actual play? And that hour takes 3.
There is a reason that my favorite sport to play and watch is hockey.
I attended a men's World Cup match in 1994 in Chicago. (Belgium vs. Germany) Although I didn't grow up playing Soccer the game was a blast! T.V. doesn't do Soccer justice. I didn't realize how much spin and movement is on the ball. The crowd was also hilarious---- we were in the German section-- and at 10am they were all hammered drunk and chanting, singing and carrying on. It was a lot of fun.
That said..... I can't watch Soccer on T.V. For me it's more boring than golf (which I like), baseball, NASCAR, or really almost anything else. I appreciate the talent it takes to play the sport, but you won't find it on my T.V.
I hope the women's U.S. team does well. Although I won't watch the games, I'll watch the highlights on ESPN!
