I've been thinking of a home defense weapon ever since buying my house a couple of months ago.

This is why.

For home defence, it's hard to beat a shotgun. Your aim can be a little off, no problem, looking down the barrel is intimidating as hell. A woman can handle a 16 guage, kick's not bad. My .02 worth.

She did what she had to do. Any judge looking at a wrongful death suit should throw it out and jail those who filed it - for contempt of having a brain and not using it.

Radio talk show host Neal Boortz refers to these as "DRT" stories, as in "Dead Right There". He would love this one.

For anyone who likes to hear someone skewer R's and D's with equal enthusiam, Boortz is the man.

For home defense load up a paintball gun with marbles. Rapid rate of fire and sound will scare just about anyone off, but no wall penetration so your babies are safe.

It's hard to tell over the internet if you're serious or not....

I hope you're joking. What happens when you and your marbles square off against a guy with a .45?

230 grain jacketed hollowpoint>marbles

I keep a USP .45 auto and an AR15 next to my bed at night. Overkill? Maybe, but I refuse to be outgunned in my own home.

His and hers 9mm in my house. Large frame for me, small frame for the wife. Scatter guns are good too. Used to know a lady who shot a burglar in the face with a 357 magnum while he was climbing in a window. +1 on the 2nd amendment.

Is it better to kill or wound in self/home defense? I ask in terms of CYA general legal B.S. to follow.

I'm pretty sure that Upland Game load(#8 shot) would not be fatal. The pellets in those are really small

Kill.

Dead criminals can't sue. What a weird world we live in, right?

A police buddy always told me if you pull the trigger once keep pulling until dry. Dead people can't testify. Besides the first few might miss.

Don't shoot to kill; don't shoot to wound. Shoot to stop the threat.

And remember that Dick Cheney shot a 70 year old man in the face with bird shot and it didn't kill him.

In my experience, just the sound of chambering a shotgun round is enough to send most miscreants running; you don't even have to be in the same room (and it doesn't even have to be loaded!)

I'm not a gun nut, I'm not into guns, and I'm left-leaning.

That said, I'm all for the castle doctrine. Texas has the right idea w/ this one. Shoot first, don't bother asking questions.

That said--the argument could be made that the dude was so drunk that he though he was at his house. THAT said, if he got inside, how would he react to the person inside "his" house???

If a dude throws a chair through your window, that's a violent threat and it's no deductive leap to say her life was in danger. Good for her for handling herself like Jesse Ventura in Predator.

as a fellow oklahoman, i saw this on the news and i support this lady 100%. i personally have an sks with an affixed bayonet close at hand, as well as a sig .45. shoot to kill is the correct answer, unless there is a video camera to record the last shot, like a local business owner who is now on trial for murder after finishing off a guy who was trying to rob him at gunpoint. he paused to shoot the guy again while chasing his accomplice out of his store. the moral of the story is, if you dont belong there, someone should (and will) kill you......

Nah, he wasted too much ammo, missed the target and died way before the serious carnage started.

The OK woman did it much better, even if she denied a screenwriter a job opportunity.

IMHO the best home defence weapon is a sawed-off (18 in is leagle in TX) 12 gauge double barrel breach load w/ bird shot. You probably won't kill him but he will wish he was. The reason for the bird shot is you don't have to worry about it going through the sheetrock and killing your kids in the next room.

You're incorrect. See the above discussion on kill vs wound.

Birdshot is NOT up to the task. http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot14_4.htm

Breech load is fine for skeet shooting, but for home defense, a pump is the way to go. As I said earlier, there's something about the sound of the receiver that strikes fear.. Hell, when I chamber a round in my (shortened, pistol grip) Mosberg 88, it gives me the willies, and I'm the one holding the gun!

Something about that distinctive "ker-shink- ker-shunk" sound has the ability to paralyze human flesh.

I prefer a handgun for home self defense. i can hold a cell phone to call 911 or a flashlight and still hold my weapon.
