Oshkosh Fly-In

So, is anyone going to the big show next week? Its always nice to meet up with people. Its from July 27 to August 2. I'll be camping as usual.

Man... I really want to watch Bob Hoover's routine now. That man is amazing.

I remember the first time I saw Hoover fly after that whole "unsafe flying" debacle in the 90s. He flew that Shrike like he was born with it. That man got the whole flight line on it's feet. Standing ovation.

I’ve haven’t been for six years and was planning on attending this year by combining the trip with some business stuff I do in Minnesota. As it turned out, I did my business thing in Minnesota last week and I was in Puerto Rico the week before that so as much as I wish I could attend Air Venture (Oshkosh for those of us over thirty) I’m just glad to be home for a while.

Steve doesnt actually own a Waco...his brother owns the company. They are based out of Battle Creek, MI. awesome facility, we watched the airshow out in front of their Hangar.

I haven't been to Oskosh since '73. I'd love to go back some time. We were flying as part of an R/C model demonstration team so we got to be right out on the flight line for most of the show. It was a hoot!

Better yet, anybody been/going to the Washington Island Fly-In?

When I was a kid, our family vacations were to Oshkosh. I think my first trip was about 30 years ago... I'm 35 now. My last trip was probably 10 years ago. When I was 17 I went to the EAA Air Academy. Perhaps one of the best experiences ever for me. I learned all kinds of workshop and fabrication stuff ( I built wing ribs for the Spirit of St. Louis replica) , learned tons of aviation history and got to meet some really famous aviation icons. (Steve Whitman, Dick and Burt Rutan, Gina Yeager, Pappy Boyington, and when I was a young kid, Jimmy Doolittle.) I was hoping to make it out there with my sister and her husband this year, but I've got some scheduling conflicts that prevent it. Oh well, maybe next year. Have a brat for me! Have a great time.

No kidding on the whole "Air Venture" thing. I have, and always will refer to it simply as Oshkosh. I'm 30, so that's OK.

Funny thing is, when I first started going, it was all about the planes. But I soon realized that they're just hunks of metal and plastic and fabric if there is no one to tell the story. I've met so many people, from famous to regular joes. It may sound sappy, but I treasure every story and every hand shake.

I'm turning 33 this week it'll always be Oshkosh to me. I've never been, but have always wanted to go. A friend of mine used to go almost every year until a couple years ago another big event he does moved they're dates up a week.

I've wanted to go ever since it was held at Rockford!

Maybe one day I'll make it.

"Oshkosh" is a city year around. The fly-in is locally known as "EAA". The Predator Drone plane flew in last week and was on the local news. Its the first time it landed at a public field. The F-22 was there last year and it was awesome.

For those of you that have never seen this from the 2007 fly-in: Plane lands on Hwy 41 I remember when this happened and the guy with the motorhome getting towed happened to know the guy that landed his plane on the highway. Small world.

I haven't been in YEARS! I remember the year the voyager was there, the last year the Concord was there.... lots of fun times there.

That's a post-retirement trip for me (not that far away at my age ).

One of my friends flew his Aeronca out there a few years back. It would be a hoot to fly mine out, but I'd need at least a week (and good weather) from NJ. Even just a couple of hundred miles is a big deal in a plane that's almost 70 years old.

And I thought the Beaver I flew in was old. I highly recommend to anyone to fly from a lake to a lake in a beaver with some young hot shot pilot. While landing all I could see out of the front was water!

Time to spare, go by air! Sometime I'll tell you a story about a trip to the poconos when I was a kid. 12 minute flight from Hackettstown airport, 5 days to get the plane back.
