So we all know the new EPA MPG ratings are lower than before, what have some of you guys observed? The '07 Taurus is rated 25 highway but the trip computer is showing an ARVEAGE of 28 in warm weather(I know, dont trust the trip computer...). My parents rental Reno with an auto was rated 29 Highway but they hadn't gotten anything under 30 out of it.
I know the goal was to make it so you could easily achive the MPG ratings, but this seams a little excesive and make "true" performance hard to judge.
I have ALWAYS managed to outperform the EPA ratings.. by a substantial margin
Altitude will also affect your mileage....
same car in Atlanta will get very different readings, than say Denver.
so perhaps the EPA ratings are the worst possible for the vehicle?
It's all in how you drive it. Blasting around in my 7 nets ~15MPG on a good day, yet cruising the backroads trying to make the next gas stop in the boonies has netted me 23+. Same story on the P71, 23 on the highway is normal, 27-30 if you slow down to 55-60 (thanks Oregon) and turn off the A/C (to actually nab 30 you have to tape up the hood and nose gaps. Seriously).
Remember, the EPA test is just that, a test. Manufacturers have figured out how to tune just for that test (look at the ridiculously good mileage Vettes have). In the real world there is WAY to many variables.
Well my z28 got 30 on the highway, cruising at 70. That's quite a long 6th gear, then again it's ofset by the 8-10 I got in town driving like a hooligan.

I way outperform in the Celica.... i get about 34mpg combined, and that's with no special driving at all. The car regularly sees over 4k rpms around town, accelerating onto the highway, and i cruise on the highway at about 75mph.
Just weight reduction, and lowered about 2.5-3". More rolling resistance due to the big tires as well.
Since when are trip computers even remotely accurate? Fill drive then fill again at exact same pump and do the math.

This car is under a tarp mothballed as it was stolen and needs a bunch of stuff replaced. It is a 96 civc hatch with the lean burn civic hx stuff swapped in. I was hoping to get 45-50 out of it but it is more like 38-42. Hopefully with a ob1 ecu and a tune I'll get there.

surprisingly, the computer in my BMW is VERY accurate..
My saab says I get between 23 and 26mpg... no matter how fast I am going or how long I have been driving. Doing the math, I get about 30ish in my 900Turbo
I drove a 745Li on a 300 mile round trip up to Penn State a few months back. I got an average of 30 miles per gallon (legitimately). It was 27 on the way up and 33 on the way back. No A/C, windows up, hypermilled the E36 M3 out of it. Fun stuff.
